Byrd, Robert E (1888-1957) Admiral, USN and polar explorer. Sepia Photograph Signed ("R. E. Byrd"), 9½ x 6¼ in n.p., n.d. Fine. Photo shows Byrd in uniform, riding in a convertible, with an American flag in background. Signature, which is in light area above his right shoulder, is slightly smudged; otherwise, an impressive photo.

Cooper, Peter (1791-1883) American industrialist, inventor, philanthropist; he designed and built the first steam locomotive in the U.S., and founded the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Large signature on a 2½ x 4¼ in. card, with block of stamps commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, founded by Cooper.

Edison, Thomas Alva (1847-1931) Inventor of the phonograph (1877), the carbon- filament light bulb (1879) and motion picture equipment. Altogether he held patents for over 1000 inventions. A beautiful (as usual) signature on a 2 x 3 in. card. Signed in pencil. Minor soiling to card, else Fine. With an envelope from "Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison…." postmarked 1921, Orange, N.J.

Morse, Samuel F.G (1791-1872) Inventor of the telegraph and artist. Autograph Letter Signed, "Saml. F.B. Morse," on fine, laid paper, 8 x 5 in., 5 West 22nd St., Nov. 10, 1871. To Rev. Morgan Dix, Trinity Rectory, declining an invitation to meet the Lord Bishop of Lichfield. In part, "…the state of my health will not permit me to go out two evenings in succession." A vertical fold bisects the signature and there is one mounting remnant on the verso, else Very Fine.

Perry, Matthew C (1794-1858) U.S. Navy Commodore who opened Japan to the West. Manuscript Document Signed ("M.C. Perry") as commander of the Home Squadron’s Flag Ship "Mississippi," 12¼ x 8 in., April 9, 1847. Perry orders the purser to pay $24 to Juan Diaz for vegetables furnished the crew of this vessel. Receipted by Diaz on verso. Fine.
