$2.50 Classic Head

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1329
1839-D. NGC graded MS-61. A beautiful example, untoned. Fairly well made for this sometimes weak date with some softness noted at the stars, but still sharper than most examples seen, particularly on Liberty's hair curls. Brilliant rather than toned, a nice display of golden hue envelops the surface with mint frost and small, scattered marks in the fields. A beautiful example of this first Dahlonega quarter eagle and the only Classic Head issue from this mint.

Approximately 150-175 1839-D quarter eagles may have survived. Most are in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine categories, with a fair number of lower-end About Uncirculated coins. In the higher Mint State grades, the 1839-D becomes rare with the finest being the PCGS MS 64 in a Stack's October 1994 sale along with one other in similar grade: Pop 7; 2 in 62, 3 in 63, 2 in 64 (PCGS # 7700) .
Estimated Value $22,500 - 25,000.
