Walking Liberty Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 844
1917-S. Mint mark on obverse. PCGS graded MS-62. Lightly toned. A Premium Quality coin for the given grade, and always desirable for the Obverse Mintmark variety. As in many instances when a new design is introduced on a United States coin, the mint chiefs changed their mind on the mintmark placement for the Walking Liberty Half Dollars by switching it to the reverse partway into 1917. On most other denominations, except for the 1916-30 Standing Liberty Quarters and 1907-33 Double Eagles, mintmarks always appear on the reverse on the major denomination. No information is forthcoming as to why the Standing Quarter continued with its mintmark on the obverse after the first year or two. The 1917-S Half Dollar is elusive in Mint condition (PCGS # 6572) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

Lot 846
1936. PCGS graded Proof 65 CAC Approved. A brilliant creamy white Gem Proof, this being the first year issue and a low mintage one at that. From 1916 to 1936, the Mint officials insisted they were unable to apply the Proofing process to Walking Liberty Half Dollars due to their modern design (compared to the former Barber type of 1892-1915). But science, Minting excellence, and a few jabs in the side by an interested collecting fraternity, finally caused the government to issue these in Proof. And what wonderful examples they made, as this lovely Gem establishes! (PCGS # 6636) .
Estimated Value $2,600 - 2,700.
