Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 766
1917. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-67. Lovely russet toning surrounds the obverse borders. The standing Liberty quarter was "intended to typify in a measure the awakening interest of the country to its own protection," Mint Director von Engelken said at the time the coins first appeared early in 1917. "In the new design Liberty is shown a full-length figure, front view, with head turned toward the left, stepping forward to the gateway of the country .The left arm of the figure of Liberty is upraised, bearing the shield in the attitude of protection, from which the covering is being drawn. The right hand bears the olive branch of peace."

Exquisite in its originality, the surfaces display a decided silvery gray cast that deepens to gold and orange-russet hues over most of the periphery. These deeper colors are largely confined to the upper and left peripheries on the obverse. As befits the grade, both sides are free of abrasions. More than this, they are temptingly close to numismatic perfection! The bold strike wanes slightly over the head, but all else displays pleasing delineation throughout. A rich endowment of mint luster further improves the already powerful aesthetic appeal, as well as the technical superiority. A carefully considered bid will secure this numismatic masterpiece for a Standing Liberty quarters collection. Nothing less will do. Pop 1; none finer (PCGS # 5706) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

Pop 2 in the 65+ grade.

1918-S, 8 over 7. PCGS graded VF-30. CAC Approved. A great rarity of the last century. Few overdates were created in the 20th century, and all are eagerly sought by collectors. Perhaps a thousand of these 1918-S, 8 over 7 quarter dollars exist, the grading services have seen about half that number, and it is likely that more are hidden away or sitting in albums, having been acquired decades ago. This one has the minute features noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate feature is plain with a glass. Apparently in the rush to get dies ready, one 1918 die received a blow from the 1917 master hub, then the hub was switched to the 1918 hub, and the die was struck again. No one noticed (or cared) that is had the overdate, and the die was shipped and put into production at the San Francisco Mint, much to the delight of collectors (PCGS # 5726) .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,200.

1921. PCGS graded MS-63. A hint of light tone, choice with satin-finish luster on all devices. With one or two exceptions (one-cent and Morgan dollar), U.S. coins struck in the year 1921 tend to be scarce to rare depending upon condition. The slowdown in production lasted through 1922 for the most part before coinage production turned up at all three Mints. The 1921 Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar is famous for its elusiveness in choice Mint State condition (PCGS # 5740) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.
