Belgium - Liège. Ducat, 1654. Fr-324; KM-74 (Liege); Delm-357. 3.46 grams. 22.16 mm. Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, 1650-1688. Crowned quartered shield within middle shield - beneath, crook and sword Reverse: Legend on decorated tablet, date below square. Rare. NGC graded MS-61.

Liege was a powerful bishopric in the 17th century, with far greater holdings than the present city in Belgium. In fact, Liege controlled much of western Belgium and parts of France. The silver coins of the bishopric of Maximilian Henry are quite common, but the gold coins are almost never offered. The legend on the reverse tablet found on the reverse indicates the Dutch influence.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Bohemia (Wallenstein). Ducat, 1631. Fr-145; KM-61. 3.70 grams. 21.94 mm. Albert Wallenstein (Duke of Friedland and Sagan), 1625-1634. Front large facing armored and draped bust in beaded circle broken at the top. Reverse: Crowned complex arms. Very Rare. NGC graded MS-62.

Wallenstein is one of the most fascinating characters of this period. Born of a noble family, he was appointed general of the Imperialist forces by emperor Ferdinand II. A great general, he won numerous battles for his commander. Unfortunately, his ego was as great as his abilities, and he so angered his officer corps, that they assasinated him.

Lot 2698
Colombia. 8 Escudos, 1769/7 PN-J (Popayan). Fr-24; KM-38.2. 26.99 grams. Charles III, 1759-1788. Draped bust of Ferdinand VI right; name of Charles III in legend. Reverse: Crowned arms, Order of Golden Fleece around. Denticles weak at upper edge, but devices full, even and sharp. Much of the proof-like fields remain. Rare in this grade, the underdate very evident. NGC graded AU-58.

The so called "transitional" types are coins with the portrait of the previous kings (in this case Ferdinand VI), and the legend of the new king (here, Charles III). It should be appreciated, in these times of precarious and slow transportation, how long it could take to transport new dies with up to date likenesses of the new king. It was easy to change the legend, but far more difficult to get the accepted portrait of the king. There seemed to be a lack of urgency as well to modernize the portrait. This coin was struck ten years after Charles ascended the throne.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
