Lot 701
1793 C-2 R 3 Liberty Cap VG10. Sharpness VF25 but covered with microscopic roughness on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No marks or verdigris. The highpoints are covered with glossy medium brown and chocolate toning while the remainder of the planchet is dark olive brown. The contrast in toning accents the design details and aids the eye appeal. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are strong. A decent example for the grade in spite of the imperfect surfaces.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1794 C-2a R2+. PCGS graded VF-30. Rather glossy dark steel brown and olive with traces of frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are decent but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity covering all but the highpoints. No verdigris. The only notable marks are a dull nick on the lower lip and a thin scratch through UNI. The date is bold and the legends are complete. EDS, Manley state 1.0, prior to any die clashmarks. The edge letters are not visible in the slab, but the more common Small Edge Letters are assumed. Our grade is net F15.

1794 C-9 R2 EF40. Choice glossy chocolate and olive brown. Smooth and very attractive, nearly flawless. A pair of tiny nicks under the left corner of the eye, a very faint scuff that barely alters the chocolate toning on the cheek, and a spot of darker toning at the dentils over the F in OF are the best identifying marks. What may appear to be tiny rim bruises around the reverse are actually strongly impressed edge letters. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die crack from the rim into the cap is strong and the tiny rim cud just left of the fraction is clear. A beautiful 1794 half cent.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

1795 C-6a R2 Without Pole. PCGS graded EF-40. Choice glossy chocolate and olive brown. Smooth and very attractive, nearly flawless. The only mark is a tiny, very light rim bruise over the L in LIBERTY. Struck slightly off center to K-10.5 on a cut-down Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. The PCGS label says it was struck 3% off center, and that may be understated a bit. The TAL Cent undertype is clearly visible in the dentils off the bust tip, but it is not mentioned on the PCGS label. LDS, Manley state 2.0, showing subtle swelling near the dentils right of the Y in LIBERTY. A beautiful example. Our grade is VF30+, close to VF35.
Estimated Value $2,500-UP.

1797 C-1 R2 1 Above 1 Variety VG10. Glossy dark olive brown and steel. Smooth surfaces with only trivial defects consistent with the grade. LDS, Manley state 5.0. The obverse die is shattered causing severe weakness at ICA in AMERICA and minor weakness at NIT in UNITED. The date is strong, including the 1 above 1 feature, and the legends are easily readable except in the softly struck areas. Struck over a cut-down Talbot Allum & Lee Cent showing clear undertype left of the date and above STAT.

1797 C-2 R3 NCS graded Good details, scratches. The obverse has the sharpness of Good-6 while the reverse is several points weaker due in part to bulges from die swelling. Slightly glossy dark olive with lighter steel and chocolate toning covering the devices. The date and LIBERTY are clear. Late die state. Our grade is net AG3+.

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0 with Reverse of 1803 VG10. Struck over Spoiled Large Cent. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned rather glossy dark bluish steel and olive. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are a few light contact marks. The notable ones are a couple light scratches in the field before the portrait. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. Struck over a spoiled large cent that was struck about 60% off center, and bold undertype from the large cent shows on both sides. STAT and portions of the wreath from the large cent dominate the lower left quadrant of the obverse and the weaker but clearly visible face of Ms Liberty from the large cent shows at D-STAT on the reverse of the half cent. The obverse and reverse elements of the large cent undertype show a face opposite STAT, and this can happen only if the cent was struck more than one time. Obviously the large cent displayed multiple striking errors before it was cut down to make a half cent planchet. While there are perhaps a dozen examples of this variety that display some large cent undertype, very few have undertype that is nearly this obvious. A very important piece for the half cent specialist.

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0 with Reverse of 1803. PCGS graded VG-8. Mostly glossy chocolate and olive brown. No corrosion, and the only notable marks are some fine scratches on the highpoints of the wreath, all well hidden in the natural toning. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. The curl left of the date is complete. The date is strong and the overdate is obvious. The legends are complete and easily readable except for the usual weakness inside the wreath. Our grade is G6+, close to VG7.

1803 C-2 R4 VG7. Sharpness near F12 but there are a couple obvious scratches in the hair and field under the ribbon plus numerous lighter ones inside the wreath. The portrait is a bit rough, probably from debris on the die. ERT in LIBERTY was blunted by die debris as well. The remainder of the planchet is smooth. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown with darker steel toning on the highpoints. Extremely rare late die state (but not the latest), Manley state 5.0 late. A strong cud break connects the tops of TATE to the rim above and a slightly raised retained cud shows over ST. This state is later than Manley 5.0 but earlier than his 6.0. Another very important piece for a serious collector of die states.

1803 C-3 R2 EF45. Traces of extremely fine roughness can be found in a couple of these dark splashes. The remainder of the planchet displays attractive glossy chocolate and steel brown toning with underlying lustrous lighter steel brown toning in protected areas. Lot 715
1803 C-4 R4 VG10. Double or Triple Struck. Five points sharper but there are a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade. The notable marks are a pair of hairline scratches down the portrait and a light rim bruise under the 3 in the date. Glossy olive and steel with lighter chocolate toning in protected areas on the reverse. MDS with the reverse rotated 10 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation. This piece was struck at least two times. The dominant strike is normal and centered on the planchet. Another impression about 10% off center left portions of the 803 and bust tip on the rim above BERTY. In addition there is an arc impressed by a blank planchet positioned about 45% off center on the lower half of the reverse, and this strike most likely left an off center reverse brockage on that planchet. Another intriguing multiple mint error in this sale.

1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin F12. Double Struck with Obverse Brockage. Sharpness VF20 or a bit better but the planchet is covered with extremely faint roughness and there are numerous shallow scratches in the field left of the ribbon and curls. Cleaned and retoned a mostly glossy olive and bluish steel brown with lighter highlights on the obverse. EDS, Manley state 1.0. Double struck. The first strike was a slightly off center obverse brockage and the second strike was normal and centered on the planchet. The incuse obverse brockage impression from the first strike shows clearly on the reverse of the normal second impression. An incuse 1804 date shows at ES-O and the bust tip is visible at F-A. Parts of the incuse LIBERTY show around the denominator. Extensive doubling shows on the obverse, including two eyes, two "spiked chins," and an extra 4 imbedded into the bust just right of the dominant 4. Another great mint error.

Otherwise free of any notable defects. EDS, Manley state 1.0. Struck on a clipped planchet, the arcing clip just touching the tops of ER in LIBERTY. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with the usual weak strike at LI in LIBERTY and the opposing dentils over UNITE. Our grade is MS60. PCGS population 33; 6 in 65BN, 2 in 66BN.

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VF30. Double Struck Reverse Brockage Maker. Ten points sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned frosty light olive and reddish chocolate brown. There are some faint hairlines remaining from the cleaning but no roughness or other notable marks. Double struck. Both strikes were centered on the planchet and the second was rotated 10 degrees CCW relative to the first. The doubling is obvious on the obverse, especially on the date and LIBERTY, which now reads LIBBEERRTTYY. There is no doubling on the reverse. Instead, it was struck into a new blank planchet during the second strike thereby creating a reverse brockage on the new planchet. The usual swelling associated with being used to create a brockage is obvious on the reverse. A sharp, attractive mint error that should improve as the toning matures.

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VG8. Double Struck Obverse Brockage Maker. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with darker chocolate and olive brown toning in the protected areas. No roughness or notable marks, just normal wear. LDS, Manley state 3.0. Double struck with both impressions centered on the planchet. The reverse was struck two times by the, and those impressions were rotated about 10 degrees between the strikes. The doubling is obvious in the wreath, and "HALF" is not parallel with "CENT" creating a very curious look indeed. The obverse, however, shows no evidence of doubling. Instead, it was pressed into a new blank planchet during the second strike creating an obverse brockage on that planchet.

1805 C-1 R2- VG10. Double Struck over Reverse Brockage. Sharpness VF35 but there are three strong dents on the portrait plus a few additional lighter contact marks elsewhere on that side. The three strong dents created bulges on the reverse. The planchet is mostly smooth but there is some very fine carbon dusted into the field left of the curls. Mostly glossy olive brown and reddish chocolate. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CW. Double struck. The initial strike was slightly off center. The obverse was struck with the die while the reverse was pressed into another blank planchet leaving an arc through CA and the denominator to the rim above UN. Then the misstruck half cent was struck normally. The obverse impressions are rotated about 15 degrees leaving strong evidence of the doubling on the neck and bust. In addition, the eye of Ms Liberty is clearly visible in the nostril on the dominant strike.

Glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas and a few small puffs of darker olive and steel toning on the obverse. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The reverse is clearly double struck but the obverse shows no trace of doubling. The offset between impressions on the reverse is very small, perhaps a half millimeter. Nonetheless, the doubling is sharp and clearly visible on the entire wreath and HALF CENT with minor doubling visible on the legend outside the wreath.

1806 C-2 R4 VG8. Very slightly sharper with a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade, including a couple fine scratches inside the top of the wreath. Otherwise the color and surfaces are very attractive for the grade. Glossy light chocolate brown with a few tiny puffs of darker olive and steel toning in the field behind the portrait. Struck with the obverse die clearly misaligned to K-10 while the reverse is centered on the planchet. Very late die state, later than the latest reported by Manley (his 3.0). In addition to a strong die crack from the 6 through the bust tip there is a fine die crack passing along the tops of RIC in AMERICA. The crack at RIC was thought to occur during the later 1806 C-3 die marriage, but this piece confirms the crack occurs during the C-2 marriage. It also invalidates Manley state 1.0 for 1806 C-3, which supposedly has an uncracked reverse. Another very important piece for the die state specialist.

Lot 750
1856 C-1 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel brown on the highpoints, at least half the red remaining. There is a trace of an old fingerprint in the field between star 1 and the throat and a nick-like vertical planchet chip just left of star 7. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a sharp die line from the leaf under ES in STATES. A very nice example of a date that seldom comes with this much original mint color. Our grade is MS63.
