1798. Large eagle. B-9, BB-121. Rarity 5. Sharpness of VF-35. Cleaned and retoned. We note some faint adjustment marks in the center on the reverse. 1798 BB-121 has an estimated population of 300 to 500 pieces, according to the Bowers encyclopedia, enough that the specialist can find one with some searching, and probably will find it at "type" price. Most specimens of BB-121 are seen in lower grade levels. The variety becomes a rarity in AU grade and may be unknown in full Mint State, if today's strict grading interpretations are used.

Lot 1655
1799/8 Draped Bust Dollar. 15 stars on reverse. NGC graded AU-53. A few reverse marks. Well struck. A pleasing Heraldic Eagle Silver Dollar of this famous (among American collectors) Draped Bust design. The surfaces acquired natural light gray patina over the still hard-working luster beneath in the years since the Mint issued it. Some slight strike weakness of strike is seen at the central hair curls. However, no such diminution occurs on the eagle's wing feathers, shield lines, tail feathers, or legends of the reverse of this handsome coin. An offering to excite the Bust Dollar collector, that is a sure thing.

This Red Book variety has two interesting points that will draw attention: the first is the clear 9 over 8 overdate (in those days, budget limits at the new Mint forced economy measures such as this whereas nowadays, any attempt to issue a "mistake" coin would result in official reprimand from the bosses. The second point where this BB-141 variety differs from others in the set is the presence of two addition stars on the reverse, bringing the correct number of 13 stars up to an erroneous 15. One of them is 90% hidden under the left-most cloud as if the wind had drifted the cloud across the horizon just where it appears. The other is barely poking out a single ray from beneath the cloud on the right. Collectors discovered this anomoly a century ago and the editors of The Guide Book of United States Coin dutifully put the variety into their Red Book.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Light to mediumm toning present, with a streak of brownish color (from planchet impurity) through the portrait. Several raised bumps around the word LIBERTY are artifacts of this die and are so noted in the standard references on Bust Dollars.

Lot 1658
1800 Draped Bust Dollar. NGC graded EF-45. Evenly toned on both sides. Well struck and very attractive to the silver dollar collector. Liberty's hair waves stand out forcefully. The top-most design features the so-called "rubbed silver" look against a darker field and main background. Attractive, too, is the way the rim dentils are complete. They lack the usual bruises and nicks that seem attracted to these big coins. Give it a worthwhile bid.

Lot 1663
1803. Large 3. B-6, BB-255. Rarity 2. NGC graded EF-40. Pleasing old time toning on both sides. An original toned Bust Dollar of the most advantageous order for a collector. Its high degree of natural toning consists mainly of medium gray with lighter accents on the high points of the design. The fields are spared the usual heavy handling marks, what's more, they are free of defects and impurity streaks. Highlighted by the nice toning are clear relief designs, meaning that this one was nicely struck, too, with just a small amount of weakness at the usual Achilles' heel on the a few central hair curls. Large 3 in the date. This is the final year of issue. At President Jefferson's instruction, the mint ceased minting Silver Dollars because of a mismatch in the metallic content versus the international value of silver at the time. The mismatch caused coins to be exported almost as soon as they left the Mint.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800.
