Lot 468
Apollo 15, 1971, "Lunar Dust" Sample. Contained on a piece of scotch tape (.75x.75") as recovered from Dave Scott's space suit after the astronauts were recovered onboard the USS Iwo Jima.

Lunar dust has the consistance of talcom powder and it adhered to everything it came in contact with, including the astronauts space suits. As a result, when the astronauts returned to the LM after their lunar activities, the dust was transfered from their spacesuits to the inside of the LM When the astronauts landed and their spacesuits were removed from the LM, they were still covered with the dust. It was during this transfer that "dust souvenirs" were collected by some of the recoverry crew members. It is even possible to see a seam or wrikle wrinkle in the dust on this tape.

The dust is mounted on a multicolor 8x10" "Williamson" certificate of authenticity giving its provenence. Given that it is illegal to own a moon rock, this dust is the next, best thing. NASA looks the other way when it comes to this dust as they have learned it can come from any item associated with the lunar surface. As long as the owner doesn't make a fuss about his ownership, no harm, no foul. If the owner DOES trumpet his ownership of this dust, then all bets are off and he might hear from NASA directly. Forewarned is forearmed.

A great piece of memorabilia for any collection.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.
