The fine die lines of the earliest state are clear. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#4 overall but finest of the early state in the Grellman census.

Otherwise this cent is choice. MDS, die state b. The repunching is still clear under the peak of the 1. Tied for CC#7. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS63BN (PCGS label included).

1853 N-28 R4-. AU-50. Repunched 1. Sharpness very close to mint state but there is a dull scrape on the eyebrow, across the lower edge of the bust, and on the letters of ONE and EN in CENT. The scrapes do not break the toning and the cent still offers mint state appeal to the unaided eye. Lustrous light chocolate and bluish steel with generous traces of original mint red remaining on the reverse. MDS, die state b. Dull but clearly visible die lines extend from the dentils at stars 4 & 12, and the repunching on the 1 is still obvious under the peak. 1854 N-5 R3. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Repunched 18. Lustrous olive and dark bluish steel with 15% of the slightly mellowed mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Frosty and very attractive, void of any spots or stains and displaying only a few trivial contact marks. The only notable defects are a very light scrape across stars 5 & 6 and a faint hairline scratch under CENT. LDS, die state c. The dentils are weakly impressed, especially on the obverse. The repunching over the 1 is gone and the repunching over the 8 is dull and barely visible. The die clashmark of the earlier state at the left top of the O in ONE is gone and a new clashmark inside the top of that E has formed. The late die state probably played a role in the folks at NGC and Heritage misattributing this piece as the rare N-28, which shares this obverse die in a later state, and this incorrect attribution is noted on their slab label. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census.

Lot 782
1855 N-9 R1. EF-40 Plus. Italic 55 with Knob-on-Ear. Attractive glossy medium brown. Close to EF45 but there are a few tiny nicks on the obverse, including a small, dull nick right of the corner of the eye. Otherwise this piece is absolutely choice for the grade and the eye appeal remains excellent. MDS, die state d. The knob break at the top of the ear is strong and raised well above the level of the surrounding details. A nice example of the popular "Knob-on-Ear" variety, and the strong knob is a big plus. Removed from an ANACS slab graded AU55 (the ANACS label is included, and it shows the attribution).
Estimated Value $50-UP.
