1923 $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Enchanting golden orange shades coupled with intense mint bloom, makes this a desirable example. A couple of minor copper spots exist.

For trivia buffs: What was the buying power of a $20 gold piece back in 1923? For starters, the daily pay for a Ford factory assemblyline worker, who did not require a high school diploma -- and tax-free, remember -- was $5 a day. A new Chevrolet roadster, 2 passenger, cost $570.00 in 1923; a "G-E Whiz," desk fan, $10.00; American light porcelain dinnerware, 52 pieces, $19.95; a gas range for the kitchen, $77.00; and a White Mountain brand refrigerator, $49.50. Oh, and for those with a constipated constitution: California prunes, 2 lbs for 24¢ (PCGS # 9175) .
Estimated Value $1,650 - 1,700.

Lot 2673
1924-D $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-63. Quite frosty with luster and all lightly toned. A scarce sought-after date. The 1924-D begins a run of rare mintmarked pieces that continues to the end of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series in the early 1930s. The majority of Mint state survivors were found in European hoards of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Writing in 1988, Breen observed that a further 70 pieces surfaced in the summer of 1983. (Perhaps these formed part of the Central American hoard in which were released several Mint State 1909-D and 1922-S Double Eagles at around the same time.) The otherwise orange-gold color yields to warmer pinkish-rose hues toward the centers.

This handsome '63 ranks among those being clearly above-average with ample mint frost and a lovely surface-to-eye aesthetic transmission. Satiny surfaces abound on both sides. A few minor bagmarks are suppressed by the volumes of luster: we note a small mark on the bottom of the eagle's neck feathers and another diagonally across two flight feathers, with gentle blurring of Liberty's face. Outside of these small blemishes, not a single disturbance worth describing. Pop 101 (PCGS # 9178) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.

1924-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice and frosty with lovely natural golden mint bloom colors. Has two small marks near the elbow of the branch hand. Lustrous eagle with some orange-gold toning above, across, and below. The 1924-S is a double eagle rarity. At one time it was believed to be among the rarest dates in the series, handily outclassing the MCMVII Ultra High Relief and the Proofs of 1883 and 1884. The arrival of a specimen at auction was a big occasion. Today, following the release of hoards abroad, the 1924-S continues to be elusive, but ample numbers exist that they come on the market with regularity, usually in lower Mint State grades. Pop 143 (PCGS # 9179) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.

1925-D $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty gem specimen with delicate golden sunset toning on both sides with hints of light olive about the borders. Lovely rich shades of color. A key date. About as close to watertight perfection as can be expected, this vibrant 1925-D makes for eye-popping originality when examined closely and with a discerning eye. As soon as one sees the booming luster, it comes as no surprise everything is razor-sharp on all devices. All sorts of succulent thoughts come to mind when we examine it, but the best that can be said its that the coin easily fits into the fabric of MS65 standards. It is a lock-solid MS65. And it has the enormous advantage that it can never be repeated in many auctions due to the low population, which we list at the end of this discussion. When a numismatist has given you those lengthy virtues, which is about all he ever thinks of, then the baton is passed to the auction bidder to tell the world what he believes the coin thus described is worth. Pop 7; 1 finer in 66 (PCGS # 9181) .

Historic note: Like the 1924-D twenty, the 1925-D also had its rarity ranking readjusted since the mid-20th century by the emergence of a few small hoards overseas.
