Lot 519
1844/81 N-2 R2. VF-25 Plus. Overdate 44 over Inverted 18. Slightly sharper but faint hairlines cover the devices on both sides. The hairlines are not visible to the unaided eye and blend nicely into the attractive glossy light chocolate brown toning. E-MDS, die state b. The inverted 18 under the 44 is bold. A decent example of this popular "Redbook" variety in spite of the fine hairlines.
Estimated Value $50-UP.

Lot 520
1844 N-3 R2. MS-62. Repunched 18. Frosty olive and steel brown with generous traces of original mint red showing on both sides. Excellent eye appeal. No spots, stains, or notable signs of contact. The only defects are a thin, barely visible planchet fissure hidden in the dentils under star 1 and a small nick-like planchet chip high on the neck, both as struck. MDS, die state c, with thin rim cud breaks at stars 8 & 9. The hair at the top of the ear is not fully struck, as always with this variety, but the remainder of the strike is excellent and all the stars show full radial lines. CC#4.
Estimated Value $600-UP.

Lot 521
1844 N-4 R1. AU-55. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown with hints of faded mint color in protected areas around the portrait. A choice cent, just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. A tiny nick on the coronet over the I in LIBERTY is the best identifying mark. M-LDS, die state c, with several thin rim cud breaks at stars 4 & 5.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

Lot 522
1844 N-5 R1. EF-45. Rim Cud on Obverse. Frosty chocolate and steel with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas. A thin but rather long horizontal nick under the eye and a trace of fine carbon right of the eye are the notable marks, but neither detracts from the excellent eye appeal offered by this cent. LDS, die state d, with a large, strong rim cud break from under the 18 to star 1.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Lot 524
1844 N-6 R3. VF-35. Slightly sharper with a few too many light contact marks for the sharpness grade. A dull pinprick midway between star 2 and the chin and a speck of verdigris at the dentils over the second T in STATES are the best identifying marks. EDS, die state a. The die lines at the throat are sharp and the fields are slightly reflective. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58 (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution).
Estimated Value $100-UP.
