Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1106
1900 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo. Only 912 Proofs issued. Lovely light blue and lilac toning. This is a splendid Superb Cameo Proof half dollar with strong contrast. The devices on both sides are sharply made. In fact, there does not appear to be any sign of weakness on either side. The surfaces are fully original, as well, given the attractive color. The fields are reflective, and these mirrors serve to backstop the lustrous devices to their full benefit. An amazing Proof 67 coin right out of the starting gate, one that represents unimpeachable quality, although three others have received this grade: Pop 4; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 86547) .

1901 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67. Only 813 Proofs issued. Lovely blue, green, and golden toning. Every once in a while, we are see a coin whose beauty is such that trying to describe it bankrupts the vocabulary. This is such a coin, although for the sake of completion in this catalog we will make an attempt to describe it a manner that provides at least a glimpse into the awe-inspiring eye appeal of this Proof Barber Half. Both sides are toned in vivid cobalt-blue and varying other colors that yield to underlying satin frost from the central devices. Deeply mirrored in finish, the fields form a splendid foundation for the colors. Further, there is not a single grade-limiting blemish, and the validity of the Proof-67 rating is confirmed. A coin that is worthy of a premium-quality bid. Pop 5; 2 finer in 68 (PCGS # 6548) .

1902 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67. Lovely shades of blue and green colors. Only 777 Proofs issued. This Proof Barber half dollar is for all intents and purposes perfect and is unquestionably the among the most beautiful of the decade that we have ever offered. It is fully struck with a sharp square edge and deep mirror fields that are immaculate and pristine. The toning is as fresh and original in keeping with the quality of the surfaces. Every star is boldly defined with all radial lines present, and the head and leaves of Liberty are extremely sharp. All of the eagle's features and talons are also fully struck as well. 1903 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67. Nice blue and golden toning. Only 755 Proofs issued. We have only handled a few other Proof 1907 Barber half dollars graded as high as this lovely Superb Gem. The coin is spectacular from both technical or aesthetic viewpoints. A hint of silvery brilliance shines through the deeply toned surface, with toning iridescence at the peripheries, across the devices, and throughout the fields. There is a little bit of light frosting over the reverse eagle, but the balance of the features are brilliant in finish with particularly vibrant mirrored reflectivity in the fields. Type collectors who will settle for only the best would be shrewd to take full advantage of the opportunity that this coin presents (along with the others in the group), especially since both major grading services combined report very few high-end Proof Barber half dollars. Pop 18; 3 finer in 68.

1904 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67. Nice even toning. Only 670 Proofs struck. It is difficult for us to imagine a more attractively toned 1904 Proof. It is certainly an expertly struck coin, possessing as it does sharp detail on even the smallest intricate elements of Liberty's design and the eagle's wings and shield. The finish imparted by the dies is no less laudable. As a whole, the Proof 1904 is a well-produced issue, and many survivors exhibit one or both of these characteristics. What truly sets this coin apart, therefore, is the unswerving high quality of surface preservation. Could it have been hand selected right after striking and subsequently preserved with extreme care? We think so. It has the looks of it. Superb! Pop 8; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 6551) .

Precious few 1905 half dollars extant display the awe-inspiring eye appeal and solid merits of this Superb-quality Proof 67. First, the eye appeal. Both sides are saturated in a range of colors. The Mint finish is nicely mirrored in the fields while softly frosted over the devices -- features that provide delicate semi-cameo contrast. At the upper reaches of grading census, and worth including in the finest collection. Pop 10; 1 finer in 68 (PCGS # 6552) .

1907 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67. Only 575 Proofs issued. Lovely blue, gold, and green toning. Iridescent steel gray as a base. The obverse is especially attractive. Sitting in your chair, breathing heavily, it is hard to conceive how such a coin came to be; and more to the point, how such a coin came to be offered, since the chances are it will be locked up in a Proof Barber half dollar set where it won't see the light of day again for many years.

As to strike details, everything is boldly crisp. Furthermore, this splendidly undisturbed superb Gem will be a cherished purchase for the specialist of toned silver Proofs. Pop 2; 1 finer in 68 (PCGS # 6554) .

1909 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 68 Cameo. Lovely shades of rainbow toning. Only 650 Proofs issued. This is a defining Proof 68 coin, stunning from both a technical as well as visual perspective. A swath of brilliance intersects the central obverse with warm deeply tinted iridescence at the sides. The reverse is similarly patinated in very becoming shades, and both sides are free of handling marks. There is a extensive frost on the Liberty and the eagle, while the fields display typical reflective finish with particularly vibrant mirrors in fact. Lot 1120
1910 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Lovely rainbow toning. Only 551 Proofs issued. A thrilling example of this always-popular Barber Type. This exception Proof specimen is well toned and very nicely struck, including clockwork precision seen in the eagle. This superb toned Proof has the appearance of a coin from an original Proof set stored in the mint tissue wrappers for the better part of a hundred years. In the early 1990s, a group of several dozen such original Proof sets, now NGC or PCGS certified and sold individually, hit the market. They made quite a splash and were quickly absorbed by eager buyers.

Four unrelated events took place in 1910, the year of this Barber quarter: the Boy Scouts were established in U.S.; Halley's Comet made its appearance, Mark Twain died, and the Tango caught on as a popular dance. Pop 5; none finer at NGC

Even a close exam under magnification fails to disclose any marks or other likely problem spots. Mintage of Proof Barber coinage gradually lessened as the years progressed. 1911 is the third lowest production of the type. Pop 4; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 6558) .

1912 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Intense rainbow toning on both sides. Only 700 Proofs issued. The majority of 1912 Proofs were handled as if by a wrecking crew going to work on a demolition site, and there seems to be little doubt that some of the coins may actually have been spent. These factors weigh on the surviving census, therefore, with few high quality coins left today. The surfaces of the Proof 68 on offer are nearly close to perfect. "Impressive" seems to be too weak a work to describe them. We would love to fill pages with descriptive adjectives about the coin, but won't. Briefly, the coin verges on Cameo Proof quality, as seen by the light satiny surface on the main devices. Toning is as expected with rich, deep, and thoroughly enjoyable shades. We expect that the successful bidder will let out an inner shout of joy when it is awarded (and if the people in the room sitting nearby lean over and listen closely, some of his elation may escape from his mouth, ears and nose in a snort of delight.) The question is: Who will be that successful bidder? Pop 6; none finer at NGC.

1913 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67. Lovely rainbow toning. Only 627 Proofs issued. The Superb Gem offered in this lot is one of a baker's dozen 1913 Proofs with the coveted 67 designation! The reasons for this are plain to see. One, gorgeous iridescent toning spreading inwards from the borders, with each side nicely corresponding to the other. Two, a bold strike yields the definition on all design elements a coin of this caliber deserves. And three, faultless quality is seen on both sides, no marks, not spots, faultless. These attributes produce a level of eye appeal which seems impossible to top. Pop 13; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 6560) .

With gleaming mirrors on both sides, the devices are highlighted by the an delightful array of original colors. This lovely Proof 67 is among the finest seen of a limited mintage of Proof 1914 half dollars. If you are assembling a Gem Proof set of Barber halves, then here is a great addition to the project, even if it means having to declare your intentions against strong competition from other bidders online, over the phone, or gripping the edges of their seats in the auction room itself. 1915 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Intense rainbow toning on both sides. Only 450 proofs issued. The 1915 is the last of three consecutive P-mint Barber Half Dollars that boast limited original mintages. Federal records indicate that only 138,000 business strike Halves flowed from the presses in that coinage facility during that year. The elusiveness of both Proof and Mint State survivors in today's market has prompted many Barber Half Dollar date collectors to obtain a survivor of the identically dated, 450-piece Proof delivery.

This exquisitely toned specimen is certainly among the finest survivors of this low-mintage P-mint issue. Both the obverse and the reverse are overall sharp in striking detail. The mint finish is multicolored iridescent, but we do note some lovely pastels over the satin texture of the central devices. The surfaces are silky smooth in sheen with nary a distracting blemish to report. With strong technical merits and eye-popping aesthetic appeal, this coin is sure to see spirited bidding at auction.
