Lot 947
1796 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded AU-53. Only 22,135 pieces struck. Light friction from use in commerce, the smooth, even surfaces show a decided contrast from gray toning around the legends and devices. The main surface area is light silver-gray. The only weak spot in the strike is seen at the center, where some of the lovelock curls remain indistinct. There is a sharp center dot below Liberty's ear, however. A couple of small marks on the eagle.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

Lot 948
1802 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded AU-55. The date logotype on this dime variety appears to be identical to that used for the 1802 quarter eagle. Interestingly, the quarter eagle has often been called an 1802/1 overdate in past literature, while we do not recall any instances of the dime being called an overdate. The lower right serif of this digit is connected to the diagonal by a short die line while the upper left curve is connected to the opposite side of the diagonal by a second die line. It is these features that led some to call the quarter eagle an overdate. It is our opinion that these merely represent slight defects to the date punch and in no manner suggest that this is an 1802/1 overdate.

A superb specimen of a very tough early dime. Frosty silver gray surfaces with luster present and somewhat grayer in the fields. A smattering of tiny contact points may be seen under magnification, many of which may have preexisted striking; we note only one on Liberty's throat for identification although some might want to add another, a scuff from the shield into the left wing on the reverse. Some light hairlines are visible as well, but the overall eye appeal is just superb -- this is a really nice early dime even before factors like rarity and die state are considered.

This piece is likely Condition Census for this rare variety, as the JR book notes that the finest specimen seen was an AU-55 that was formerly in the R.L. Miles collection. NGC has certified only one Mint State specimen! The rarity of the 1802 date is famous, and we expect competition for a coin of this remarkable quality will be fierce. Pop 1; 1 finer in 62.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

1837 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded MS-62. Seated. No Stars. Even natural toning. During the latter half of the 1830s Mint officials decided to spruce up the silver coinage. They picked Christian Gobrecht's now-famous rendition of an allegorical Liberty seated on a boulder to do it. Mint condition No Drapery Dimes and Half Dimes featuring Gobrecht's original starless design are attractive. Moreover, they were minted only in 1837 and 1838. Pop 27.

1846 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded AU-58. Many point to the Little Orphan Annie 1844 seated dime as a difficult acquisition. It does not, however, have the least mintage in the Stars Obverse series, for that honor belongs to this 1846 with a mere 31,300 pieces originally delivered. The 1846 is rare in all grades. Since Brian Greer (1992), a seated dime authority, states that the 1846 is particularly elusive at or above the EF level, this choice, lustrous and toned About Uncirculated 58 survivor is destined to be a magnet for bidders in the auction. Both the obverse and the reverse are naturally toned at the rims in prevailing russet and gray patina. There are also a few swirls of lighter, old-silver color blended together through the central obverse. By the time we get to the reverse, some iridescent steel blue has appeared in a few areas outside the wreath. Plenty sharp when it comes to striking definition, every device is evident despite light highpoint wear. We find there are no noticeable abrasions to detract attention. Undeniably this is one of the most significant offerings of seated Liberty coinage in this sale, and a coin that would grace any collection with its presence. Pop 1; 1 finer in 61.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,500.

1860-O Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded AU-55. 40,000 pieces struck. Only one variety is known of this date. A solid, light silver-gray About Uncirculated 55 example, there are some light hairlines visible under closer examination. Of the rather meager mintage, only a minuscule percentage has made it down to the present, most disappeared. There are only a few Mint State examples known of this date, and these are extremely expensive; even high grade circulated pieces such as that offered here are very rare! 1894 Barber Dime. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. A snow-white superb cameo gem. What more can we say? The coin is gorgeous! It is grand. The fields dance. The devices sparkle. So much, then, for the luster although we wish we could go on. Scanning the devices, these were struck with sufficient power by the dies that they left all design elements showing, and showing clearly, confirming that quality control was primed at the Mint in 1894! Only 972 Proofs struck. Pop. 8; 4 better, 2 in 67*, 2 in 68.
