[Explorers] Byrd, Hillary, Ballard, and Cousteau. Six items: Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) Polar explorer and aviator. 3 x 5 in. toned Card Signed "R E Byrd," n.p., n.d.; Sir Edmund P. Hillary (1919-2008) First human (with his sherpa Ten Norgay) to climb Mount Everest; 5 x 3½ in. Photo Signed "E.P. Hillary," and a business card as High Commissioner for New Zealand signed the same;.Dr. Robert D. Ballard (1942 -) explorer who found the Titanic. 6 x 4 in. color photo signed "R.D. Ballard,"; also a business card as President of the Institute For Exploration signed the same. Jacques Cousteau (1910-97) Underwater explorer and filmmaker, a 7 x 5 in. photo signed "To Harry / J Y Cousteau." All fine.

Edison, Thomas A (1847-1931) Prolific inventor. Signature cut from a letter, "Thos A Edison," in pencil on 2 x 8 in. paper laid to slightly larger cardstock, n.p., n.d. Glue remnants at edges. Very good. Edison's signature is beautiful as always.

[Fields, Cyrus]. Souvenir section of the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable from 1858, 4 x ¾ in. Banded in brass at both ends, where the core structure can be seen. Accompanied by a facsimile document signed by Field and datelined New York, Aug. 21st 1858. It states, "This is to certify that I have sold the balance of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable now on board of the U.S.S.F. 'Niagara' to Messrs. Tiffany & Co. Jewellers No. 550 Broadway of this city, and that the piece which accompanies this, is a genuine section thereof."

Cyrus Field was the driving force behind the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable, which was laid by the U.S.S.F. Niagara and completed on August 5, 1858. The cable broke three weeks later and lasting connections were not finalized until 1866. Tiffany & Co. bought a quantity of unused cable from Field and cut it into sections to be sold as souvenirs.
