Reverse: Fantastic animal right, with long tail and raised foreleg. Good strike on fine metal. Attractive even toning. This denomination was also sometimes called a denarius, and in fact it was the earliest type of penny. Eadberht was the brother of Ecgbehrt. Rare, and a perfect illustration of this classic, early Anglo-Saxon design. NGC graded AU-55.

Despite a deserved reputation as a particularly crudely made coin, this specimen is exceptionally sharp in parts and compares well with other Stephen Pennies. Lightly cleaned. The period was one of civil strife and regal power struggles, which may explain why coinage production lacked the finesse seen in other reigns. Very Fine.

Great Britain. Crown, 1658/7. S.3226; ESC-10. By Simon. Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector. A classic in super-nice condition! A really choice example. Reflective surfaces beneath dark bluish gray toning, with hues of gold iridescence. Some small marks and faint hairlines in the color. Struck from buckled dies, which produced the extensive die-break that runs entirely across the base of Cromwell's throat and through the top of the drapery. The overdate is crisp, sharp as can be. Legends and design are well struck but lack the tiny detail that can be seen in a Proof made 80 years later by Tanner. Compare the two pieces and you will discover the artistry that made Thomas Simon, who engraved the dies for this coin, world famous. The very first milled English crown, and a joy to behold in every way, but particularly for its tone and prooflike surfaces. The consignor believes this to be ex Beaumont. NGC graded MS-64.

Great Britain. Crown, 1687. S-3407. James II, 1685-1688. Second Bust. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left. Reverse: Crowned cruciform arms, Garter star at center. TERTIO edge date. The flan exceptionally nice and the strike better than usual, albeit there is a touch of softness in the king's portrait, more due to die wear rather than strike. Overall, the centers are well defined and the reverse exceptionally sharp. Excellent eye appeal thanks to strong luster and bright amber-gold or pinkish iridescent toning in the recesses, which simply sparkles against the deeper gray fields. NGC graded MS-62.
This reign was very short, producing some of the rarest milled coins, in various denominations, of the century. This is the one date crown that does, occasionally, appear in Uncirculated condition. Very scarce type, usually not found much better than VF.

Great Britain. Crown, 1695. S.3470; ESC-86; Dav-3781. William III, 1694-1702. First bust. Edge: SEPTIMO. First year of issue for this king. A delightful specimen! Medium golden gray toning, but bright, evenly distributed on both sides, providing premium eye-appeal. Well struck, the king's hair well defined and the reverse shield exceptionally sharp in all details. Nice high rims and wide denticles. Evidence of die-rust in the fields, and a touch of black alloying flecks in the metal. One of the most pleasing to be found! Very rare in this exalted grade. NGC graded MS-63.
