Byzantine Empire. The Empire of Thessalonica, Theodore, Comnenus-Ducas, 1224-1230. Electrum or Silver Aspron Trachy. Nomisma (2.6g), Thessalonica 1227. The Virgin Hagiosoritissa, nimbate, stg. facing, her hands uplifted (orans), stars in lower field to l. and to r. Rev. Facing stg. figures of St. Demetrius, on r., and Theodore, on l., the saint, who stands on dais, nimbate and wearing military attire and presenting triple-towered castle to the emperor who wears crown, divitision and jeweled loros, manus Dei in upper center field. DOC 2 var.; Hendy pl. 37, 3-4; Sear-Bendall 2159. Good Very Fine and very rare.

The Virgin seated facing on square-backed throne, holding before her nimbate head. of the infant Christ, stars to l. and to r. above arms of throne. Rev. Facing stg. figures of Theodore, on l., and Christ, with nimbus cr., on r., the emperor wearing divitision, jeweled loros and sagion and holding sheathed sword and akakia, Christ crowning the emperor with r. hand and holding book of Gospels in l. DOC 3 var.; Hendy pl. 37, 5-6; Sear-Bendall 2160. Good Very Fine and very rare.

Byzantine Empire. The Empire of Thessalonica, Theodore, Commenus-Ducas, 1224-1230. Billon Aspron Trachy Nomisma (1.6g). Thessalonica1. 229/30. Effaced bust of Christ Emmanuel facing. Rev. Theodore stg. facing, crowned and wearing loros and sagion, holding labarum and globus surmounted by patriarchal cross, manus Dei in upper field to r. Unpublished in the standard works of reference in this size; for the full-sized billon trachy of this type, cf. DOC 10 (type G), Hendy pl. 38, 8-9, and Sear-Bendall 2168. The reverse Very Fine, the obverse effaced in striking, very rare.

The smaller-sized billon trachea of Thessalonica appear to have circulated in Bulgaria whereas the regular-sized pieces were generally current in northern Greece.

Byzantine Empire. The Empire of Thessalonica, Theodore, Comnenus-Ducas, 1224-1230. Bronze Tetarteron Noummion (3.96g). Thessalonica 1227. Cross crosslet on globus resting on three steps, pellet within crescent on shaft, facing half-length figure of Theodore on l., wearing crown, divitision, and jeweled loros and holding akakia, facing half-length figure of St. Demetrius on r., wearing nimbus and military attire and holding sword and shield. Rev. Inscription of Theodore and his titles in seven lines across field. DOC 11 and pl. XL (this coin); Hendy -; Sear-Bendall 2169. Very Fine with dark patina and extremely rare, possibly unique.

Similar to previous, but the inscription on rev. is abbreviated and in five lines. DOC 12; Hendy pl. 38, 10-11; Sear-Bendall 2170. Very Fine but some flatness in the obverse striking.
