Byzantine Empire. Andronicus I, 1183-1185. Gold Hyperpyron Nomisma (4.23g), Constantinople. The Virgin, nimbate, seated facing on square-backed throne, holding before her circular medallion with the bust of the infant Christ. Rev. Facing stg. figures of Andronicus, with forked beard, on l., and Christ, with nimbus cr., on r., the emperor wearing divitision, loros, and sagion and holding labarum and gl. cr., Christ crowning the emperor with r. hand and holding book of Gospels in l. DOC 1; Hendy pl. 18, 9-10; Sear 1983. Extremely Fine and rare, an exceptional example of the much sought-after gold coinage of this brief reign.
