Unpublished in all the standard works of reference and extremely rare, one of only three known specimens. Good very fine/almost extremely fine, several hairline flan splits.

This remarkable type invites comparison with the histamenon of Constantine IX (DOC 4) thought to commemorate the supernova of 1054. It seems possible that this coin is also related to some significant celestial event.

Christ seated facing on backless throne, wearing nimbus cr., raising r. hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels. Rev. The Virgin, nimbate, on r., and Manuel, crowned and wearing jeweled loros and holding akakia, on l., both stg. facing, holding between them long patriarchal cross with small globus at base. DOC 3a; Hendy pl. 13, 3-4; Sear 1958. Extremely Fine, the emperor's face weakly struck, double-striking on obverse.

but the emperor's globus is surmounted by plain cross instead of patriarchal (five jewels on collar). DOC 1f; Hendy pl. 12, 12; Sear 1971. Extremely Fine and extremely rare.

Hendy (DOC 4.1, p. 281) notes that the Gornoslav hoard contained only two specimens of this type out of the 264 hyperpyra of Manuel.

Facing stg. figures of Manuel, on l., and St. Demetrius, on r., holding between them labarum with long shaft, the emperor wearing crown, divitision and chlamys and holding akakia in r. hand, the saint nimbate and in military attire. DOC 9; Hendy pl. 14, 7-9; Sear 1974. Good Extremely Fine, an unusually sharp striking.
