1824 N-2 R2 PCGS graded MS64BN. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Choice frosty steel and chocolate brown with faint wisps of darker chocolate toning on the right side of the reverse. Attractive satiny mint frost covers the entire planchet extending to the highest points of the design. The only defect is an extremely shallow low spot covering much of the cheek, as struck (caused by a bit of debris, possibly grease used to lubricate the mint machinery). Otherwise this cent is a gem. Sharply struck except for the upper stars, which are missing their radial lines. MDS. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #28834. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#5. MDS showing fine die flowlines in the fields on both sides and the inner circle on the obverse mostly gone. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21586. 1824 N-4 R2 PCGS graded MS66RB. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red mellowing to steel brown, nearly half the original color remaining on both sides. As close to perfection as I could imagine for an 1824 cent. The only identifying marks are a faint, nearly invisible spot of darker toning on the tip of the chin and a thin diagonal swipe of slightly darker toning close under star 12. E-MDS with microscopic die flowlines in the fields and very fine die cracks connecting star 5 to star 6 with another joining the 4 in the date to stars 13-11 nearly extending to star 10. The strike is sharp except for weakness on most of the stars where the radial lines are weak or missing. If you are looking for a top-drawer 1824 cent, this is your opportunity. Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census (Del Bland doesn't throw that grade around without good reason). Noyes says MS65 choice and tied for CC#1, his photo #21718. Our grade is MS66. PCGS Population 1; none finer.

Lustrous steel and chocolate brown with subtle overtones of light bluish steel toning on both sides and traces of faded mint color peeking through in a few of the protected areas. The fields are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The only marks are a few microscopic ticks on the cheek below the eye and a couple more over the N in CENT, but these marks are barely visible even with the aid of a glass. Nicely struck MDS with an extremely faint die crack from the bust tip to the peak of the 1 in the date down toward the dentils and another equally faint one down through the right point of star 7 through the I in LIBERTY and eye to the nostril. The dentils do not show any crumbling or rim cuds. Struck very slightly off center to K-10.5. Called MS65 choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20555. Bland says MS65 and tied for CC#1. Nearly flawless surfaces with unbroken satiny mint frost. The only marks are a couple microscopic specks of reddish brown toning on the obverse and a splash of darker olive toning at TA in STATES. Late die state with a faint die crack from the bust tip into the field right of star 1 and another that joins the top of the 5 in the date to the curl close to star 13. Struck very slightly off center to K-10.5. This cent was plated in Wayte Raymond's Standard Catalog, the forerunner to the "Redbook" we enjoy today. Henry C. There is a dull nick-like planchet chip on the cheek and a thinner one on the chin, as struck, plus a few specks of darker toning in the obverse fields and a speck of crud on the lower point of star 5. Satiny mint frost covers both sides and the eye appeal is exceptional in spite of the minor marks. MDS with a faint die crack joining the N's in ONE CENT to the leaves over the O in ONE. Called MS63 and finest known in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #21686. Our grade is MS63. NOTE: The envelope for this cent is literally covered with a typed note from Doug Smith. Doug liked to document interesting elements of coin transactions on his envelopes, and this note is especially interesting. Part of his note reads "Traded to The Mad Monarch (Jerry Bobbe) on 8/11/74, after incessant bugging & when he finally exercised his "droit de seigneur"; but regained from him almost immediately when the coin was, even more immediately, DROPPED by a numismatic wife who shall remain anonymous. The coin was unharmed but not so The Mad Monarch's psyche, which was forever dented." 1826 N-7 R1 PCGS graded MS65BN. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Lustrous light chocolate and steel brown with a few peeps of faded mint red showing through in protected areas of the obverse but 20% of the original mint color remaining on the reverse. There are a pair of dull, light marks on the upper cheek near the eye and a small spot of slightly darker toning high on the neck plus another in the field over star 13. Otherwise this piece is quite nice and the reverse is flawless. MDS with die clashmarks on both sides, and the ones on the reverse show an outline of Ms Liberty that is rotated 30 degrees clockwise from the normal head-to-foot die orientation present on this coin. This odd situation is noted in John Wright's discussion of this variety in his book on the middle date cent series, "The Cent Book." Called MS63 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20586. Beautiful and highly lustrous light bluish steel brown with slightly mellowed mint red covering the protected areas on both sides, especially on the obverse. Virtually flawless in every respect, a small spot of very fine carbon at the dentils off the stem tip being the only mark visible without a very strong glass. M-LDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields on both sides. Many of the stars and letters in the reverse legend are drawn toward the rims. The undertype inside the top of the 6 is dull but remains visible, remnants of the undertype 5 (although there is some discussion whether or not this is a true overdate). 1826/5 N-8 R2 VF20. VF-20. Overdate 6 over 5. Sharpness at least EF45 but this piece was pickled in acid and then retoned frosty dark olive and steel. The only mark is an arcing depression from star 4 to the tip of the chin and down to the bust tip, perhaps where this cent was touching another large cent while in the mild acid bath. Once upon a time large cents were intentionally placed into pickle barrels to help keep the pickles nice and green. I doubt the USDA would approve of such a practice now, but it might account for the number of acid-etched large cents we encounter today. Sometimes these cents are so thin and distorted from the experience that they may have been rejected as large cents in the marketplace following a proper rescue. Anyway, this piece retains relatively sharp details and there are traces of the undertype 5 inside the top of the 6 (although there is some uncertainty regarding whether or not this is a true 6 over 5 overdate).
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1827 N-1 R2 (R8 as a proof) PCGS graded MS64BN. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Attractive medium chocolate brown and bluish steel with faded mint color bleeding through in protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a speck of darker toning in the field over star 1 and a dull nick hidden in the hair above BE. Intermediate die state with no crumbling in the dentils and hard, reflective fields on both sides, and those fields display fine hairlines. A small struck-through mark caused by a tiny piece of wire or thread extends down from the right base of the N in UNITED and a similar struck-through line arcs from the right top of the E in CENT down into the leaves under the adjacent C. Similar struck-through lines are often found on proof large cents, a result of the constant cleaning and polishing done to the dies and planchets used for these special strikes. The reflectivity of the fields combined with the struck-through marks and early die state give this cent the look of a proof strike, and Del Bland calls it just that, a Proof-60. The Bland census does not contain a single confirmed mint state example for this die variety. Noyes calls this piece MS60 and tied for CC#1, his photo #35922. Denis Loring calls this piece "questionable proof" in his census of proof large cents. Mr. Naftzger considered this cent to be "Brill. Red Proof" as he noted on the envelope (the red faded away over the years). Our grade is MS64. PCGS Population 2; none finer.
