Lot 1458
2.6 Inch Pre-Maxilary T-Rex Tooth. Virtually all T-Rex teeth found are shed teeth that broke off while the T-Rex was feeding on another dinosaur. Usually these teeth are just fragments or are broken into many pieces, but this extremely large 2.6 inch Pre-Maxilary tooth is the exception. Only the tip was found separated from the rest of the tooth and put back into place, otherwise there is no restoration. There is some wear to the enamel at the tip that occurred while the T-Rex was still alive and there are some light cracks in the enamel that are always present. Pre-Maxilary teeth were found at the front of the jaw and were larger as they were used to strip meat from the bone. They are very distinctive in having two rows of serrations on the opposite sides of the regular teeth. This 65 million year old treasure was found on a private ranch in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana and is displayed in a 5.5 x 4.5 inch Riker mount.

280 Million Year Old Amphibian Larvae. Even though the earliest amphibians ventured forth on land, they still deposited their eggs and the hatching larvae went through all of their developmental stages in the water. This set of four fossils represents four developmental stages from long thin tadpole like animals to a 2.5 inch long transitional animal with short tiny legs to a 3 inch long complete amphibian with small very defined legs but still possessing gills which are visible between the head and first legs. The exact species of amphibian cannot be determined from the larvae, but these fossils were found in the Pdernheim Pfatz in Germany and are found together with adult specimens of Actinodon and Sclerocephalus. All four of these fossils are displayed in a 9 x 6.5 inch clear plastic box.

Bizarre Trilobite with Long Eye Stalks. Neoasaphus kowalewski was a very strange looking trilobite with extremely long one inch eyestalks and must have looked like something from another planet as it crossed the warm ocean floor 450 million years ago in the Wolchow river near St. Petersburg, Russia. This strange trilobite would bury itself in the sand with just its eyestalks exposed to hunt small prey animals and protect itself from predators. This lovely complete brown trilobite is 2.75 inches long on a 5.5 x 4.5 inch limestone matrix. The best preserved and most beautiful trilobites come from Russia and are stunning with the medium brown color contrasting the light tan matrix.

Fossil Badlands Turtle With Bite Marks. Stylemys nebrascensis was a 30 million year old tortoise that roamed the White River Formation of the Badlands of South Dakota. This interesting specimen measures 7 x 6 inches and is well preserved with bite marks from some sharp toothed predator with three bite marks on the top of the shell and another bite mark on the plastron. The outer carapace was formed by a series of scutes made of keratin originally (the same material our fingernails are made of). Most of the underside of the tortoise, the plastron, which was formed by bony plates is preserved along with a 1.5 inch leg bone and other bones are clearly still buried in the matrix. Fossils that show evidence of predation and possibly what killed them are highly valued for their scientific interest as well as their beauty.

Giant Complete Ammonite. Ammonites are extinct cephalopods that resembled an armored squid. Since their tentacles and body were soft tissue they do not fossilize and we only find their beautiful shells remaining. This giant 14 x 10 inch Cleoniceras ammonite is 110 million years old from the island of Madagascar and is complete with amazing hues of caramel to light brown on its polished outer surface. It is one of the most striking museum quality ammonites, with most of its surface covered with a fern shaped suture pattern which strengthened its calcium carbonate shell. Each species of ammonite could be identified just by its own distinctive suture pattern. This ammonite has both size and beauty.

Golden Ammonites From Holzmaden, Germany. Holzmaden is famous for its yield of excellently preserved fossils that are roughly 180 million years old and especially for its ichthyosaurs and golden ammonites. These ammonites are extinct relatives of octopus and squid that have had their mother of pearl shell replaced with a golden colored pyrite over the millions of years that they were buried. On this immense 35 x 28 inch black shale matrix is a very large 8.5 inch in diameter pyritized ammonite Harpoceras sp. as well as over 20 other smaller Harpoceras and Dactylioceras ammonites. These ammonites show the defining ribbing patterns that indicate the size of the inner chambers. All ammonites from Holzmaden have been flattened under the pressure of fossilization and the plates can easily be mounted and hung on a wall if desired.

Lot 1468
Huge 210 Million Year Old Aquatic Reptile. Ichthyosaurs were a fast swimming marine reptile that have been extinct for more than 100 million years and somewhat resembled dolphins in shape. Their bodies were built for speed like a dolphin but their skeleton was very different. The earliest ichthyosaurs were much more reptile-like with longer thinner bodies and smaller fins and paddles. Mixosaurus panzianensis, found in the 210 million year old Guaning Formation of Panxian County, China, is one of the earliest and most primitive of ichthyosaurs. It had a long thin body with heavy vertebrae and a straight reptile-like tail. This 21.5 inch long specimen is more complete than most specimens even though the ribs and some of the leg bones are disarticulated, but its vertebrae, tail and parts of all four paddle bones are present. The large skull is 5 inches long with several sharp teeth still present and Mixosaurus had very large eyes which may indicate that it swam at great depths in search of prey. The 1 inch long paddles are just reptile feet with a few extra phalanges extending their length to create paddles for swimming and steering. This rare and important early ichthyosaur fossil is nicely centered on a 23 x 11.5 inch black stone matrix, backed for stability as the matrix is somewhat fragile and the recovered specimens always come out in a number of pieces. There is 10-15% restoration on some of the teeth, but overall the specimen is one of the finer fossils available of this rare primitive ichthyosaur.

Ichthyosaur From Holzmaden, Germany. The 180 million year old Ichthyosaurs are the most famous and popular of the fossils found in the slate pits of Holzmaden, Germany. Of all the aquatic reptiles of their time, the dolphin-like Ichthyosaurs were the best adapted to their environment and were known to have live births. This large 31 inch long Stenpterygius quadriseissus Ichthyosaur is well articulated with the excellently defined 3-dimensional bones that Holzmaden is known for, missing only the snout on the head and two of the legs. There are some teeth visible as well as a sclerotic ring, which was a bony plate surrounding the eye giving it protection. The delicate rib bones, body and tail vertebrae, as well as two of the foot paddles are in excellent condition and the Ichthyosaur is nicely centered on the 33 x 19 inch natural stone matrix. Complete Ichthyosaurs from Holzmaden sell for more than $25,000. This remarkably well preserved specimen should be a bargain due to its missing snout.

Rare Partial Nest Of Three Oviraptor Eggs. This original partial nest of three complete Oviraptor eggs is 70-80 million years old, from the Djadokhta formation of Ukhaa Tolgod in Mongolia's Gobi Desert. The eggs are 6.5 inches long and belong to the largest of the two Oviraptor species called Citipati. Citipati Oviraptorids were made famous by a 1995 discovery of a fossilized nest of eggs with a mother Citipati sitting on top in a brooding position. Now displayed in the New York Museum of Natural History, it was revolutionary to discover a dinosaur perching on its eggs like a bird and only later was it discovered that Oviraptors such as Citipati also had bird-like feathers. The name Oviraptor means "egg stealer" and when first discovered in the 1920s, the paleontologists believed that they were eating eggs that they thought belonged to an early horned dinosaur named Protoceratops. Later, an Ociraptor embryo inside one of the elongated oval eggs proved them wrong. Citipati eggs are ratite in texture and have a very thin shell which is why they are rarely found complete. This nest is 14 x 7 inches on its original red sandstone base and contains three complete eggs, 6.5 inches long and 3 inches wide, with at least 80% original shell. The shell is a gray color with a thin layer of matrix covering part of the original unhatched shell. Single Citipati eggs are getting harder to locate, but multiple unhatched eggs are only available when collectors or fossil dealers are willing to sell their treasured partial nests.

Rare Permian Age Primitive Reptile. Captorhinus magnus was one of the very first reptiles that laid its eggs on dry land (amniote) and was an early ancestor of synapsids. It is known as a stem reptile which other reptiles branched off from. Eventually, one of these branches evolved into the Archosaurs that survived the Permian extinction and gave rise to the dinosaurs much later. This impressive looking mounted specimen is a composite. The bones are carefully cleaned, matched and assembled to yield an impressive specimen such as this large 18 inch long museum quality specimen mounted on a 20 x 11 inch black matrix and having only about 15 percent restoration mostly on the ribs and delicate spines. The 270 million year old bones are found in a quarry in the arroyo formation near Lawton, Oklahoma and represent a catastrophe that killed hundreds of these reptiles at one time. The detail is excellent, particularly the large 3 x 2.5 inch fierce skull which has been prepared open to show the rows of tiny sharp teeth and also the mysterious small round hole in the center of the skull which paleontologists speculate may have allowed sunlight to enter the skull to the pineal gland. The ribs have been cemented to the matrix, adding stability to the very delicate bones and still keeping a very natural appearance that the strange reptile is crawling over the matrix.

Rare Troodon Dinosaur Egg Nest. Troodon was a small, fast predatory dinosaur about six feet long with slender limbs and the largest brain for its size. It was feathered with long folded arms like a bird and had large sharp retractable sickle-shaped claws on its second toe, much like Velociraptor. Troodon had very large eyes (perhaps nocturnal) and excellent hearing and binocular vision. It is very rare in the fossil record, but some embryos have been found in these eggs confirming that they are from Troodon.

This 11 x 9 inch partial nest of eight and one half eggs is 70-80 million years old and found at the Djadokta formation of Ukhaa Tolgod in Mongolia's Gobi Desert. A complete nest contained between 34-40 eggs laid in pairs. Troodon eggshell is extremely thin at only 1mm thickness and does not preserve well. Each egg is about 3 x 1.5 inches and has had the matrix on the shell professionally removed using small tools and a microscope revealing the textured ratite surface. These eggs are supposedly hatched, but the collapse of some of them and missing shell could also be because they are so fragile. Partial embryos have been found in eggs very similar to these. These delicate specimens were laid standing up in the sand and still retain that position in their original red stone matrix, as well as 30-50% of their original thin shell. This is perhaps a unique opportunity to add extremely rare dinosaur eggs to your collection.

Seven T-Rex Teeth In Molded Jaw. T-Rex is the most famous and popular dinosaur due much in part to its size and its large serrated teeth. T-Rex teeth are considered rare and are in great demand, selling for thousands of dollars each depending on size and quality. This molded and painted section of an upper T-Rex jaw has seven real shed teeth with added cast roots to create a realistic and impressive study jaw since the real thing is not available. The teeth vary in size from 0.75 inches up to a large 2 inches. Just like those in museums, these teeth have between 10-50% restoration to them. Fortunately, the best quality teeth happen to be the largest ones. The roots have been recreated to give some idea of what the size of the teeth would be in the T-Rex jaw before they were broken off while it was feeding. Also, all seven teeth can be removed from the jaw for study. With the three larger teeth being worth more than $1,000 a piece, this molded jaw with seven total should prove to be a real bargain.

Termites And Twigs Preserved In Amber. Amber is fossilized resin from extinct pine trees. Occasionally insects would become trapped in the sticky resin and be mummified (dessicated) with incredible preservation of their soft tissues, muscles, microscopic detail, and sometimes even color. Young Columbian amber is found primarily in the Andes mountain range and has not been properly dated, but this specimen is probably between 1-5 million years old. Featuring a classic golden honey color, much like Dominican amber, this extremely large 5 x 4 x 2.5 inch clear nugget weighs more than a pound at 530 grams. Its color and clarity allow for detailed study of a partial termite colony and the twigs they were eating when they were preserved. There is also an anhydro water bubble with a large drop of water contained inside. One 2.5 inch section of amber is lighter in color and slightly loose but still attached. This lighter amber was probably deposited at a later date than the main mass. Overall, this rich amber specimen is both a beautiful and interesting piece for any collection.

Three Jaw Segments From Saber Toothed Fish. Enchodus was a very unusual fish that lived 70-80 million years ago in the warm seas of present day Morocco. It was a predatory fish that grew to over 15 feet in length and had large 2 inch long fang-like teeth on both its upper and lower jaws. For this reason it has come to be known as the "saber toothed herring," although it is not actually a herring. Though it was large and ferocious, it was also preyed upon by mosasaurs that were up to 60 feet long. Enchodus teeth are much rarer than mosasaur teeth which are found in the same phosphate mines of Khoribga, Morocco. The 18 x 10 inch stone matrix contains three 7-8 inch jaw segments from at least two different Enchodus and 15 teeth with the saber teeth being 2 inches or more and the smaller teeth 1-1.25 inches. In addition, there is one 3.8 inch long saber tooth with its root that is separate from the rest of the jaw segments.

Triceratops Lower Jaw Plus Teeth. This huge 17 x 8 inch lower jaw of the popular horned dinosaur is relatively complete, though fragmented, and is quite informative as to what dinosaur finds look like. This lower jaw is a great example as it was found in dozens of pieces and then put back together like a prehistoric jig-saw puzzle. This impressive jaw stands on its own with the 9 x 3 inch section of the jaw that contained the teeth with several broken teeth visible. This good size 6 x 5 inch nose horn was found intact on a private ranch in the 65-67 million year old Hell Creek Formation in eastern Montana. What separates this nose horn from most collected is the overall quality of the light brown bone. The horn is mostly complete except for some cracks that were filled and 2-2.5 inch section on the back of the horn that is missing only its top layer which gives access to the detailed bone quality inside the horn. The detail shows the hollow honey comb structure that enabled Triceratops to keep the weight of its enormous head down. Two Foot Long Triceratops Brow Horn. With its two distinctive long brow horns and the fact that it lived at the same time as T-Rex, Triceratops has proven to be one of the most popular dinosaurs. This 24 x 7 inch brow horn is very large and from a mature Triceratops. The horns of a Triceratops are never found without cracks and are usually found in pieces. This is an excellent specimen that was found in two pieces with a complete tip needing just some minor restoration to repair some cracks. There was a 6 inch section between the two pieces that was missing. This section has been professionally restored by a paleontologist and matches perfectly. The grooves in the horn, known as the horn core, represent areas where blood once flowed. In life the horn would have been covered with keratin (like our fingernails) and would have been about 30% larger. This excellent large and heavy display fossil is 65-66 million years old and was found on a private ranch in Montana.

Two Gigantic Trilobites. This magnificent museum quality slab is 22 x 17 inches and contains two of the largest trilobites that ever lived. Even more remarkable, these Acadoparadoxites sp. trilobites were some of the very first of their kind at over 500 million years old. They were one of the largest predators of the warm mid-Cambrian seas that once existed in present day Morocco. The larger of these beasts is 15 inches long and 11 inches in diameter, making it one of the largest trilobites ever found. The other specimen is 10 inches long and 9 inches in diameter. Found in Morocco's Atlas Mountain range, they have an attractive rusty orange color due to limonite (an iron oxide) which nicely contrasts the gray matrix. They are virtually complete with only minor restoration of a few of the spines on the pygidums. With most trilobites being only an inch or so in length, finding a mass mortality slab of multiple giant trilobites is a very rare occurrence.

Very Rare and Important T-Rex Humerus. While Tyrannosaurus Rex is the most famous of all dinosaurs, there still are a number of mysteries connected to whether it was a hunter or a scavenger and what it used its small arms for. Even though a number of partial T-Rex skeletons have been found, only a few have been fairly complete and only two have had complete arms, making this offering of a near-complete 2 foot long humerous a rare opportunity. Even though the total length of a T-Rex arm was not much longer than a human arm, its humerus was more than twice as long and twice as thick. Whatever the T-Rex used its arms for, it did not appear to be very effective as most arm bones found show evidence of having been broken and healed while the dinosaur was alive. This enormous bone is 24 inches long, 7 inches wide on the large end, and 5 inches wide on the smaller end. The bone is nearly complete with just some natural cracks and a small missing portion on the smaller end. The missing area yields a wonderful view inside the bone which reveals a honeycomb-like structure that is distinctive in T-Rex bones and that was necessary to make the bones lighter in such a massive creature. This 65 million year old humerus is one of the largest, if not the largest, T-Rex humerus specimens known and was found in the Hell Creek Formation on a private ranch in northern Montana.

Woolly Mammoth Tusk. Complete tusks from a woolly mammoth Mammuthis primigenius are rare. This complete 22 inch long 1.5 inch diameter tusk is from a juvenile Mammoth that was most likely a male because of its size. It has been polished to reveal various shades of brown with patches of cream colored ivory. These colors resulted from the original white ivory being mineralized over thousands of years by minerals such as vivianite and iron phosphate. This museum quality tusk was found in the Taymyr Peninsula of Siberia and is between 30,000 and 100,000 years old. Most recovered Mammoth ivory is found in broken pieces unlike this exceptional specimen which comes with its own display stand.

Lot 1495
Wooly Mammoth Hair and Ivory. This large specimen of 30,000 year old Wooly Mammoth hair comes from the only Mammoth specimen available from about a dozen frozen Mammoth carcasses that have been found in the frozen permafrost of the Indi-girka Basin of Siberia. Hair does not fossilize and therefore is extraordinarily rare in extinct animals and definitely contains much original DNA. This specimen contains much more hair than usually offered and has examples of the long reddish-brown hair that covered the body of the Mammoth as well as a clump of the soft tan colored inner hair. Also included in the 8 x 6 inch Riker mount is a 6 x 1.5 inch section of fossilized Mammoth Ivory that is dark brown on the outside and ivory colored on the inside. This rare specimen of Mammuthis primigenius hair was part of the collection of Dr. Gennady Baryshnikov of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, Russia.

Wooly Mammoth Tooth. Wooly Mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) had the largest individual teeth of any animal that ever lived. Mammoths had six pairs of molars in both their upper and lower jaws during their lifetime, each one larger than the preceding one. This gigantic 14 x 6 inch near perfect molar was one of the very last sixth molars. The dark brown color and superb smooth surfaces with no chips is very unusual for Mammoth teeth and the root is virtually complete with just a couple of minor chips on the end. Most Mammoth teeth come from the North Sea where they are dredged up in fishing nets resulting in sea damage, cracks and missing pieces, but this museum quality tooth is 30,000-75,000 years old and was found in the frozen tundra of Siberia, Russia where the best preserved Mammoths are found.
