Lot 45
GT-4, 1965, Ed White II's NASA Exceptional Service Medal. This NASA medal is mounted in its unique blue/gold box with the name "Edward H. White II" inscribed on the box. The medal is inscribed on its reverse: "Edward H. White II / June 11, 1965". This medal was awarded to White only 3 days after the splashdown.

The medal box includes a printed enclosure that reads: "We regret that the lapel pin, and the ribbon rosette (which is being hand-fabricated in France) were not available in time for this ceremony. They will be sent you in the future". We have not encountered this label before. It shows how unprepared NASA was to honor Ed White's "Walk in Space". The missing rosette and lapel pin were subsequently supplied as the rosette alone is included with this medal. The lapel pin, worn extensively by White on official occasions, has been misplaced in the fog of history.

To have the opportunity to acquire a NASA medal, inscribed to and issued to the astronaut who performed one of the iconic milestones in America's space history (the others would include Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A color photocopy of a NASA photo of McDivitt and White wearing their NASA Exceptional Service medals and standing alongside President Johnson after he awarded them their medals, is included.

This lot is a truly unique piece of space history. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of this medal will be given to the White Family Foundation at the University of Michigan.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.

GT-4, 1965, McDivitt & White Autographs. Signed on the mat (professionally framed to 17.5x21.5") surrounding a professional black and white photo (13x10") of them addressing the Congress of the United States, June (11th) 1965, after their return from space. Note that they both are wearing their NASA Exceptional Service Medals, awarded by President Johnson earlier in the day. Both astronauts have autographed the mat surrounding the photo in black ink.

Ed White's First American Walk in Space was one of America's space iconic moments and both astronauts were given the respect of the nation as highlighted by the honor of this Congressional Address - one of the few ever made by an astronaut. Don't miss this opportunity to acquire an important record of American space history.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.

GT-4, 1965, Ed White's Lockheed F-104 Personal Coffee Mug. This multicolor pottery globular coffee mug was made personally for Ed White when he was one of the handful of Lockheed test pilots that flew the Lockheed F-104 high altitude test vehicle. The mug is hand inscribed in gold: "Astronaut Ed". A personal item at the time, probably less than 10 similar mugs were made for the other test pilots and far fewer have survived the test of 50 odd years. In excellent condition, this mug is a record of a momentous time.
Estimated Value $750 - 1,000.

GT-7, 1965, Prime/Back-up Crew ORIGINAL Polaroid Photo (7.5x4.25") This unique black and white photo was taken during the NASA crew photo session by Ed White's personal Polaroid camera. It shows the crew (Borman & Lovell) and the back-up crew (White & Collins) in a unique, unpublished parody of the official crew photo. Note the headgear. White is wearing a NASA "Photo Division" light reflector to simulate a coolie hat, Borman is dressed as a "Blues Brother", Lovell is wearing his naval cap and Collins has a nurses cap. It looks as if there is a base to a model on the table in front of them. The photo has a normal blue Polaroid film stamp on the reverse and the usual brown film stain on one edge. A unique, striking photo that is a piece of GT-7 history.
