Lot 609
Church, Frederick S (1842-1924) American Artist and Illustrator. After serving in the Civil War, Church studied at the Chicago Academy of Design, and later at New York's Academy of Design and the Art Students League. His illustrations were printed in numerous American periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and Harper's Bazaar. Best known for his drawings of birds and animals of all kinds, he often endowed them with human and humorous characteristics.

An extensive, mostly signed, collection of approximately 100 pieces: drawings, sketches, watercolors, etchings, engravings, photos and letters. In all, over 50 original delightful drawings and sketches (many annotated) of humans, cupids, mermaids, intermingled with an array of animals, done in a variety of medium: pen & ink, charcoal, pencil, pencil & watercolor, ranging in size from 4 x 5 in. to 12 x 19 in., dating from 1878 to 1917. ALSO included, 4 autograph letters signed (one with photo), 1 autograph note signed, 31 signed engravings, a CDV of young Church in Civil War uniform, a set of silhouette postage stamps, the title page of "Uncle Remus" (pub. 1887) illustrated by Frederick S. Church, as well as numerous mounted newspaper clippings and magazine articles detailing Church's life and works. Original Frederick S. Church watercolors and drawings such as in this collection have been bringing between $350 to $4,000 each.

Greenaway, Kate (1846-1901) British children's book illustrator and writer. Autograph letter signed, 1p, 6 x 4 in., 11 Pemberton Gardens, Holloway, N., 21 Nov. 1881. To F.W. Wappett: "I have much pleasure in granting your request." Fine; frame has a few nicks. Matted with a reproduction of one of Miss Greenaway's charming illustrations from 1884 and framed to an overall size of 13 x 17 in.

Morse, Samuel F.B (1791-1872) Painter and inventor; best remembered for inventing the telegraph system and (with Alfred Vail) the Morse code. Autograph letter signed ("Saml. F.B. Morse"), 1p, Poughkeepsie, 11 June 1855. To a sculptor named Palmer in Albany, inviting him to visit and offering to show him "a beautiful natural landscape, and some of nature's little statuettes that would be agreeable studies." Matted with a small image of Morse and framed to an overall size of 20 x 12½ in. Fine.

Lot 613
Rodin, Auguste (1840-1917) French artist; the foremost sculptor of his time. Autograph letter signed ("Aug. Rodin"), 1p, in French, 9 x 4½ in., 77 rue de Varenne, 1 May 1911. To Monsieur A. Cippies, who has ordered a replica of "the little mask of Hanoko in bronze green patina which is found at the exposition which the International Society is organizing. The price of this little mask would be 2,000 francs and you would have to wait 18 days to three weeks before I could send it to you…." The letter is framed with a medal of Rodin by Andre Lavrillier and framed to an overall size of 11¾ x 14¾ in. Fine. A COA from the late autograph dealer Charles Hamilton is on the verso.

Tenniel, John (1820-1914) Artist and cartoonist; best remembered for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Autograph letter signed, 1p, Maida Hill, 8 Feb. 1891. A letter of congratulations to Lady and Sir Francis Jeune for "certain delightful 'recent events'." Matted and framed to 19 x 10¾ in. Fine.

Vargas, Alberto (1896-1992) Painter of pin-up girls and erotica; his "Varga Girls" often appeared in Esquire magazine and later in Playboy magazine as "Vargas Girls." Autograph letter signed ("Alberto"), 1p, on notebook paper, 11 x 8½ in., n.p. (October 1978). To Smithy and Pamela regarding his autobiography which was about to be published, his beloved wife Ana (who died in 1974), and the enormous amount of unfinished work that awaits him at the age of 82. "Luckily my eyesight and my hands are still in perfect order…I stay clear from arguments recriminations and anything else that tends to incite and disturb my mind…."
