Lot 518
Jay, John (1745-1829) A founding father of the United States; he served as President of the Continental Congress and as minister to Spain and France, then became the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1789-1795) and Governor of New York (1795-1801). He co-authored the Federalist Papers with Alexander Hamilton and James Madison and negotiated the Jay Treaty with Britain in 1794. Document signed as Governor of New York, 1p, 10 x 16 in., Albany, 30 Aug. 1798. Appointing "William Alexander Captain of a Company of Artillery in the Brigade of Militia in the County of Herkimer…." Fine; clean and attractive. Seal is intact at upper left and signature is bold. Matted with a portrait of Jay in judicial robes and framed to an overall size of 17 x 29½ in.

Warren Earl - Signed Photograph of All Nine Members of the Court. Formal 12 x 17 in. portrait of the U.S. Supreme Court justices, c. 1963, signed by Chief Justice Earl Warren, as well as by associate justices Tom C. Clark, Hugo L. Black, William O. Douglas, John M. Harlan, Bryon White, William J. Brennan, Potter Stewart, and Arthur J. Goldberg. The photographer was J. Ackad, Washington. Fine condition; a couple of corner creases affect nothing.

Washington, Bushrod - Correspondence To "Gen.(eral) La fayette" (1762-1829) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and nephew of George Washington; he served in the Continental Army and retired at Mount Vernon after his legal career.
Autograph note signed in the third person, "Judge Washington," 1 page, 8 x 6½ in., datelined "Walnut Farm - June 12, 1802". In full: "Judge Washington presents his most respectful compliments to Mons. Pichon, and requests the favor of him to forward to Gen. La Fayette the enclosed letter [not present] by the first conveyance." There are a few tiny scattered flyspecks and small 1 x 1½ in. paper loss, partially touching two letters; archivally tipped to a larger sheet. Even after George Washington's death, his family stayed in touch with Lafayette, who had been like a son to Washington.
