This very rare variety, with legends reading "Shim'on"/"Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel", is very seledom seen for sale. It has only one die pairing. Leo Mildenberg, who wrote the important corpus and analyses of the Bar Kokhba coin series, considered the reverse doe of the large bronze series, bearing the fluted amphora, as the finest and most beautiful design "in the entire Bar Kokhab coinage." Since all coins struck during the Bar Kokhba War were overstruck on Roman host pieces, it is instructive to discover the date and type of the first striking. We know, for instance that some coins minted during the Roman Republic were thus still in circulation nearly two hundred years later in Judaea. This particular coin, for example, was overstruck on an eastern drachm of Trajan.
