Lot 876
1858 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Star. In NGC holder 3210948-007. The year 1858 marked the launch of regular Proof sales to collectors, which, it so happens, meant the beginnings of numismatics in America. Reported mintage was 80 sets in Proof, although it is likely the figure is more in the neighborhood of 300 coins. That coin in this lot has strikingly beautiful color and surface reflectivity with fully lustrous devices (gently frosted) against nicely mirrored fields. The center on each side is more or less brilliant with just a thin layer of color, surrounded by deeper gold, lavender, and blue toning, much of which is iridescent. The surfaces show a few minor lint marks and other blemishes such as a minor flake below Liberty's elbow, but only a single raised bubble in the field below the inside base of the final A serves to mark the pedigree. This is the only certified Star Proof in this grade, and may represent one of the most appealing examples regardless of designation. Pop 1; 2 finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Lot 877
1876 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Lovely golden sunset and electric blue toning about the edges. This being the centennial year, 1876, with activities, fairs and gatherings to celebrate the occasion, it should not come as a surprise to the coin collector that Mint sales of Proof sets increased somewhat over earlier years. However, we feel that survival of choice and gem Proof half dollars of 1876 are just about as scarce and unavailable as previous issues, with this piece displaying strong, beautiful cameo contrast. Only 1150 Proofs struck. Pop 9; 6 finer (PCGS # 86437) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,000.

Lot 878
1879 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. Lovely midnight blue and golden toning. An incredibly original and highly reflective Gem Proof, almost serving as a benchmark for other examples that share this Proof 65 grade and splendid toning. The strike is bold and crisp, and thoroughly convincing to the critic's eye, certainly none of the head and shoulder details are left to the viewer's imagination. Only 1100 Proofs struck. Pop 33; 29 finer (PCGS # 6440) .
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,500.

Lot 879
1879 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Housed in an old green holder. Well struck and white. Silver mirror-deep luster radiates from the surfaces of this attractive Proof. The strike is strong, as expected, with exact definition to the high points, on both shields, as well as on all 13 stars. Close to gem quality, in other words, and definitely worth bidding. Only 1100 Proofs minted. Pop 81; 38 finer (PCGS # 6440) .
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,400.

Lot 880
1881 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66 Prooflike. This is a thickly frosted, Gem quality representative of this desirable low-mintage date from the 1880s. As often found, the fields are naturally prooflike from almost-new dies (the dies barely had time to get worked-in before production ceased). The devices, mimicking a Proof, are frosted, in this instance, brilliant white frost. Finally, clockwork precision seen in the main device. Pop 2; none finer at NGC. (PCGS # 6363) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
