Lot 1481
Danish West Indies. Proof 20 Francs or 4 Daler 1905. Fr-2, KM-72. Christian IX, 1863-1906. This denomination was issued for two years, 1904 and 1905. For each date, the Royal Mint at Copenhagen made, as they explained to this cataloger many years ago during a research visit to the Royal Danish Museum, what they considered to be "special strikes", and what we present day numismatists generally call Proofs. As with many other Scandinavian Proof coins, they are also called Specimens and sometimes Prooflike as the depth of mirror fields varies. All are nevertheless as Proof as the mint made them at the time, indeed "special strikes". The mintages were miniscule, estimated to be about 10 pieces or so for each year, and surviving examples are all extremely rare.
A perusal of the NGC census report for "special strike" 4 Daler coins shows two for 1904, a Specimen-64 (now termed PL as they revamp their terminology) and a Proof-65. For 1905, they show two Specimens (again now PL), one 63 and one 66 (this coin), and a Proof 65, a total of special striking certifications for both years of only five coins, and this assumes that none of the five listed were re-submissions. Based on research we have done, we believe that the various designations of proof status presently and confusingly used, refer to one and the same "special strike" minting process used by the Royal Copenhagen Mint those many years ago.
Of the five "special strike" coins discussed above, this presently offered example is the highest graded, Specimen-66, and as such it is indeed much more than just special, it is the best! NGC graded Specimen 66.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.
