Lot 3961
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. NGC graded VF-25. O-119. Elongated die defect lump above point of star 15. Somewhat irregular toning that is deepest along the lower obverse border. Overton-119 is easiest to recognize because the leaf on the reverse touches the base of I in UNITED. Berries arranged 9 + 9. This is one of the scarcer varieties (Rarity-4 in Parsley-Overton). Only 11 graded for the variety at NGC (PCGS # 6052) .

1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Pointed 6, stem not through claw. NCS graded Details of VF-20. Improperly cleaned. A popular type -- this reverse variety, the only one lacking a stem, shows that the finer details on the heraldic eagle side were put in separately, not only the lettering was hand-punched into the dies (PCGS # 6073) .

Lot 3968
1815 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 5 over 2. . Overton-101a. NGC graded MS-64. NGC serial #1619260-004. Wonderful blue and golden toning. Well struck and choice for this rare date. One of the finest examples we have ever handled. A fascinating example of this key Bust half dollar date that is one of the top dozen known. Even disputatious experts agree it is one of the most beautiful in terms of aesthetic enjoyment, though tied with several others at this technical grade level. The toning supplement greatly to coin's allure, with rich colorful shades over iridescent lustrous surfaces. There is a concentric ring of purple and blue at the stars and legend. Both dies have minor clash marks, as seen on a large percentage of half dollars in 1815. Mintage fell to 47,150 pieces during 1815 when the climax of the Napoleonic Wars reached a crisis, upsetting the world's specie payments system. Little silver or gold was sent to the Mint that year for coinage, and this paucity in supply continued through to 1817 or 1818. Then, to add tragedy to misery, in January 1816, a disastrous fire struck the Philadelphia Mint areas housing the rolling equipment used to prepare the ingots and strips of silver and gold coinage. Production ceased until repairs could be completed in 1817. The disruptions of the Napoleonic Wars, and our own War of 1812 with Britain brought impaired coin production. According to historical accounts, the 1815 coinage that was produced was circulated through the Planter's Bank of New Orleans. Most survivors today are well circulated or badly impaired. Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated coins can be found for a price. However, this particular coin seems to be with us only through the favor of providence. It belongs in a world-class set of United States coins. Pop 6; 2 in 65.
Estimated Value $45,000 - 55,000.

1818/7 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Small 8. . Overton-101. Rarity-1. NGC graded MS-64. CAC Approved. Nice deep blue toning on both sides. A worthwhile addition to a Bust Half Dollar collector's holdings by any standard, the luster is not in the least timid or yielding, while the toning hues blossom on both sides. The strike, like the luster, is confident, indeed, as bold as ever seen on virtually any 1818 overdate. A gorgeous coin. Pop 9; 3 finer, 1 in 64 star, 1 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 6114) .

1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. . Overton-115, R3. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC approved. Well struck with nice blue and grey toning. Most specimens of O-115 show die cracks contiguous to the legend, at UNITED STATES and one passes through MERICA leaving a small lump at the center of R and continuing through 50C to the edge below the leaves, as noted here. An impressive MS63 with smooth luster under the toning highlights. Representative sharp strike for the date, as well includes excellent detail in the head and eagle areas of the design. Definitely very choice where objective quality is concerned. Pop 53; 51 finer (PCGS # 6129) .

1832 Capped Bust Half Dollar. . O-103. Rarity-1. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with lovely blue and golden toning. A beaming gem rolling in unbeatable cartwheel luster that emits boldly beneath the naturally toned highlights. Possessed of a much better-quality strike than is typical for an 1832, although there is some suggestion at the rims that the dies were nearing the time for retirement. Centers are crisply detailed. 1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-63 PQ. A frosty white coin. Likely a later strike from the dies, judging from the details. The surfaces are satin silver. Struck with not quite the required mathematical precision (but aren't most 1834 bust halves this way?), with some areas incomplete on the high points by an unsuccessful strike left by the rebound of the dies. The surfaces, however, are exceedingly choice for the grade, silvery, smooth, devoid of marks or tarnish spots. We consider the grade to be Premium Quality.

1835 Capped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC approved. A nice frosty coin. An nice array of rich golden hues grace the periphery of this lovely choice condition Bust half dollar. A small area of striking weakness is seen at the stars on the obverse while a lack of rim dentils and sharpness at URI can be seen on the reverse, but the present MS64 is still extraordinarily beautiful. 1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC approved. Well struck and nicely toned. A special choice Mint State example in all respects, the luster is smooth, fresh and unyielding, while natural shades of toning accent both sides. The strike is bold in the centers but typically soft in areas at the stars and rim dentils, indeed, one of the few choice examples seen on virtually any date in the 1837-39 Capped Bust half dollar series. The Philadelphia Mint struck the issue on its newly installed steam-driven press. (The early bust halves were struck on hand-operated screw presses which sometimes left an uneven impression.) 1870-CC Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded AU-50. Encased in PCGS holder 60096988. Light even toning on both sides. Very popular first year "CC" mint coin. Although essentially untouched by cleaning or any signs that it was ever tarnished, the smooth, light to medium gray surfaces show a few small marks that a collector can use as identifiers since this is among the finest specimens on the market today. There is a small mark near the elbow that crosses the staff holding the liberty cap. Another equally small mark is in the field a short distance from Liberty's leg. On the reverse, there is a small darkish area of toning at the 4 o'clock position near three of the dentils. The strike is excellent for this mint. That is seen in the full, clear motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the scroll above the eagle (this area is often a problem spot on With Motto dates). All in all a sensational coin for the advanced seated Liberty half dollar collector. Pop 4; 5 finer; 2 in 53; 1 in 55; 1 in 62. (PCGS # 6328) .

For a detailed account of the Carson Mint in Nevada, collectors will want to acquire a copy of Rusty Goe's "The Mint on Carson Street". In his reflections on the year 1870, the year the mint opened for business, Goe has this to say: "On February 10, 1870 the stars seems to be properly aligned and Carson City was ready for the first coins ever bearing the "CC" mintmark to be delivered. The 2,303 silver dollars set in motion the timeless love affair rooted in the operations oat the Carson City Mint. Two months later, the half dollar became the second silver denomination struck at that legendary institution. Ten days later, on April 20, 1870, quarters were produced, thus rounding out Carson City's inaugural year offering of silver coins."

Goe goes on to observe that "approximately 100 years after the 1870-CC half dollars were minted, numismatists established that no more than 40 pieces existed. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, information about a hoard of double that size came to light. When the time came, numismatic researcher Randall E. Wiley confirmed the existence of a 90 coin hoard. Wiley examined this significant hoard in 1986, attributing varieties and assigning grades. No fewer than 55 pieces graded AG to VG, 23 were F to VF, and nine received the XF rating. Only three coins qualified for the highest grade in the lot, that being About Uncirculated (AU)." This is significant for prospective bidders of the lovely About Uncirculated specimen offered in this lot!
