Crowned arms of Castille and Leon; assayer's initial at left. Reverse: Crowned pillars over waves, motto between; value below. Choice even strike, perfectly centered on very round flan. Very fine old collection toning. Of the highest rarity, and the utmost historical interest for New World numismatics. This is among the finest of little more than a handful of known examples.
It is thought that from 7 to 10 examples at most, in any grade, exist. The coin's fame and desirability rests on the fact that it was the first crown-size coin of South America. Francisco del Rincon opened the first mint in the Americas in Mexico City in 1536. NGC graded AU-55.
Lima was founded by the conquistador, Francisco Pizarro in 1535. He named it the city of the kings. It became home to the Viceroyalty of Peru, and an important religious center as well. In fact, Lima was the second city of the New World behind Mexico City. Its mint was opened in 1568. The first 8 Reales coins struck there are great rarities. As stated by Wayte Raymond, "Of the greatest rarity and interest."

Ex F.C.C. Boyd Collection. This coin is the Wayte Raymond plate coin (F.C.C. Boyd); and so too for Dasi (copied from the Coin Collector's Journal, Jan.-Feb. 1947, page 13). This coin's only auction appearance was in the Superior A.N.A Sale, August 1975, lot 2022, selling against a $2000 estimate for an astounding, at the time, $23,000. A similar but somewhat lesser example (lot 20) sold in 1988, at the Swiss Bank Coins of Peru Auction, October 1988, for an even more astounding $120,600! Illustrated in Money of the World, coin 145.

The "Royals" were struck on specially selected, round planchets with special dies - the dies not necessarily having the same designs and inscriptions as those coins of the same date and mintmark in the regular coinage. Some of the better specimens may have well been sent to Spain so that the king could see for himself what fine handiwork was being done at the various mints.

Rare in this grade. Considered among the finer known. NGC graded MS-61.
This particular design, with the large bust of Ferdinand, was only struck at the Lima mint, and was the first 8 Escudo portrait type produced there. The type was only issued for three years (1751-1753). A very important and highly desirable coin.

Pristine surfaces and shimmering cartwheel luster beneath matte old gray toning, which lightens towards the edges to an iridescent display. Probably the finest known. Rare in this grade. NGC graded MS-65.
It must be remembered that coin collecting was not a hobby practiced in Peru or Spain at this time to any significant degree. Thus, high grade silver crowns such as this example are very rare in grade, since there was little motivation to preserve them. Some can be found as sea salvage examples, but they show evidence of saltwater corrosion. To find an example such as this one is special indeed.

This coin the finest known. NGC graded MS-64.
The Order of the Golden Fleece, located on the coat of arms here, is an order founded by king Philip of Burgandy in 1430. It was modelled on the English Order of the Garter, and its membership was limited to thirty knights plus the king. Its members were part of a very elite group enjoying significant privileges. All crimes commited by these knights could only be abjudicated by the same knights. The king had to consult the knights before going to war, and any knights found guilty of a crime would not be imprisoned, but would be placed in the custody of other knights from the Order.

First year of an 1808-1809 type, which was changed later in 1809. NGC graded MS-64.
What is somewhat ironic is that the name Peru derives from the word Biru, which was the name of a local Indian ruler who lived in Panama. Pizarro mistakenly thought Biru was further south and called the area Peru after the Incan ruler. Spain recognized the name Peru in 1529. So not only did Pizarro get it wrong, but the area was named after a native. Such a native would be captured, enslaved, and exterminated by the conquerors.

Rulers all over Europe adopted the laurel wreath in imitation of the ancient Roman rulers. This was supposed to garner respect. Symbolism was of great importance considering the low literacy rates of the times.

The words "plus ultra" are found on the pillars on the reverse of most Spanish large silver coins. This motto is the motto of Spain and means further beyond. The two pillars represent the Pillars of Hercules, and in ancient times this was the westernmost boundary of the known world. The original motto was "nec plus ultra", meaning nothing farther beyond.

The first crown for Independent Peru. This being one of the finest known examples. NGC graded MS-63.
Peru's independence was proclaimed in 1821, but the revolution dragged on until 1824. Spain did not want to relinquish this profitable colony, and actually made additional attempts to retake it. It was not until 1879 that Spain officially recognized Peru's independence. This crown is known as the Peru libre (free Peru), type. A tough coin to find this choice.

Cuzco served as the ancient Incan capital. It is situated in southeastern Peru at an altitude of 11,500 feet. It was conquered by Pizarro in 1534. Incan tradition says the city.was built by the great king Sapa Inca Pachacuti, who transformed the Incan area from a small community to a great empire. Archaeological evidence disputes this legend and has the city at an earlier origin.

Coin with minimal gentle handling -- fields remain very lustrous, while the reverse still shows strong cartwheel effect. NGC graded MS-61.
Machu Picchu was the spiritual center of the Inca nation, and has a special place in the hearts of the Peruvian people. Although less than 50 miles from Cuzco, it was never discovered by the Spaniards, and therefore never destroyed. Today, over 400,000 tourists visit the site each year. It was "rediscovered" in 1911 by the Yale archaelogist, Hiram Bingham.

Peru. Republic. 8 Reales, 1857 -Oz (Pasco). Eliz-167; WR --; KM-142.13. 23.29 grams. Liberty stands frontal, draped and cloaked and wearing aegis, holding spear while one hand rests on shield. Reverse: Shield of arms flanked by wreath, and crowned above by wreath of oak. Clean, sharp strike, although the centers are a bit soft. Some light marks, yet the overall appearance is very clean. Superb toning, with much remaining luster on the reverse. Extremely Rare. NGC graded AU-58.
This is the rarest type coin in the South American Republic series. When Wayte Raymond published his work on New World silver dollars, the type was unkown to him. Since then, only four of this type have been confirmed, with not over seven rumored to exist. Being the most elusive of rarities, only three public sales have occurred over the past three decades. Of these, one was a seriously damaged About Good. Another example, sold at auction in 1983, in the ANA "America's Sale," and fetched $28,600. Another, in Very Fine only but with a legend variant, brought $20,900 in 1990 (Superior, Dec. 1-2, 1990, lot 781).
