Lot 1044
Dominica. "Heart-Pierced" Dollar, ND (c. 1770-1772). Prid-16; WR-13; KM-20 (as Martinique). 22.68 grams. George III, 1760-1820. Type IV. Host coin: Mexico Pillar 8 Reales, 1756 Mo-MM (Mexico City), of Ferdinand VI,1746-59 (KM-104.1); heart-shaped piercing, with cable border edging at front and back. Well centered on a well struck reales. Even gray toning, with colorful iridescence in the recesses. An attractive example. Rare. NGC graded EF-45.

This dollar was first tariffed at 10 Bitts when first issued with the heart-shaped piercing. By 1798, however, the value had been raised to 11 Bitts. The patterned edging to the pierced shape was introduced around 1765 as a deterrent to prevent the shaving of silver from the edges of the opening. Apparently this "unscrupulous" practice of shaving, which it seems was practiced by many, became early on a sufficiently widespread problem to require this remedy.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
