El Salvador. Republic. "Barrios" Silver Pattern Peso, 1861. Eliz --; WR --; KM-Pn3. 25.37 grams. Bare head of President Barrios right. Reverse: Shield of arms, with radiant sun over row of mountains, within wreath of coffee berries and sugar cane. Superb strike, with handsome light smokey toning, having hints of russet and deep golds. The fields are beautifully mirrored, with only occasional faint hairlines. Extremely Rare.

Only 2 or 3 examples known. NGC graded Proof 62.

Gerrardo Barrios was a liberal minded individual who was president of El Salvador a few times between 1859-1863. He actually did an excellent job as president, but he attempted to interfere in Nicaraguan affairs against their conservative government. Nicaragua retaliated by supporting a coup against him in El Salvador. He fled, was captured by the Nicaraguans and was executed.

Ex Pena Collection. Important, as no regular coinage was issued until 1889.

El Salvador. Republic. Peso, 1914 C.A.M. Eliz --; WR-2; KM-115.2. 25.01 grams. Decimal coinage. Flag-draped shield, with Cap of Liberty and cornucopiae above, arms below, all within wreath. Reverse: Bust of Christopher Columbus left. Superb strike, with splendid medium to deep gray toning, with iridescent undertones in golds, magentas, greens, and blues. Very Rare.

Estimated mintage of 20. The only proof issue struck at the Philadelphia mint. NGC graded Proof 64.

El Salvador, in Central America, is both the smallest nation in the continental Americas next to Belize, and the most densely populated. It is approximately the size of Massachusetts. It is named after Christ, the Saviour. It is regularly beset by hurricanes and earthquakes, which has hampered its economic growth. The natives in the sixteenth century, known as the Pipils, strongly and successfully defended their territitory against the Spaniards on numerous occassions.
