Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 883
Danish East India. Speciedaler, 1671. Dav-409; Hede-63A; Schou-6; Salv-19. Plain edge. Christian V, 1670-1699. Draped, armored and laureate bust right. Reverse: Within palm wreath, "C5" and "DOC" (Dansk Ostindisk Compagni) monograms, each crowned, dividing date. Lightly cleaned long ago but with much luster remaining, and nicely retoned over time. NGC graded AU-50.

The Danish East India Company was formed in 1616 for the purpose of importing trade items from India, with a base in Trankebar, and it actually imported far more tea than the British East India Company. In fact, it sold much of its tea in England! Coins such as this Speciedaler were minted to pay for the Indian trade, yet it was soon determined that paying in gold and silver specie was more practical, so few coins were minted. This piece is a great rarity and one of the more historically significant silver coins in this sale.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
Ex Irving Goodman Collection.
