150 Million Year Old Aquatic Reptile. Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensisgen was a strange looking aquatic reptile with a very long neck that lived 150 million years ago in freshwater lakes in present day Liaoning Province, China. Sinohydrosaurus, which translates to "Chinese water dragon," may be an ancient relative of the fierce Komodo Dragon. This specimen is quite large at 19 inches long and mostly complete except for the end of its tail and two back feet. Most of the rest of the skeleton is present, with excellent detail for such a fragile fossil. The rib bones and even smaller gastralia rib bones are detailed, as well as the delicate skull. The 17 x 10 inch matrix of soft tuffaceous volcanic rock has been nicely smoothed and backed for stability.

280 Million Year Old Amphibian And Fish. Set on the same 20.5 x 15 inch matrix, this lot contains a 280 million year old well-preserved 8.5 x 3 inch Paramblypterus sp. fish fossil, as well as a remarkably preserved 11 inch long early amphibian, Sclerocephalus hauseri. The fish is complete with excellent scale and fin detail, while the important amphibian is near complete with a well detailed 2 inch long skull that includes a row of sharp teeth, plus skin impressions along the entire body. Skin impressions are rare as they are soft tissue, and even the texture of the skin is detectable in this remarkable specimen. Only one foot and a few digits on the other feet of the amphibian are missing, along with some restoration to the end of its tail. These museum quality fossils are from the Odernheim Pfatz in Germany, a site that has been closed for many years.

5 Inch Stromatolite Sphere. Stromatolites are fossils of laminated rock formed from the layer-by-layer buildup from microbial mats of cyanobacteria over thousands of years. Stromatolites formed the very first macro fossils found in the fossil record going back several billion years. This beautiful 5 inch sphere from Bolivia's eastern Andes weighs over 6 pounds and is roughly 2.3 billion years old. The fossilized dark brown rock was cut and polished and contains many tan and lighter brown fossilized cyanobacteria colonies resembling concentric oval rings on top and wavy concentric layers all along the side of the sphere, making the overall appearance to be like that of a strange planet. A small display ring is included to help showcase this spectacular piece.

Ammonite Sculpture. Ammonites were cephalopods that resembled squid in a spiral shaped shell. This aesthetic 9 x 7.75 inch sculpture features a 100 million year old golden brown ammonite, Phylloceras, from Sidi Yahya Said, Morocco. Set atop a 200 million year old Crinoid (related to starfish) base, the Phylloceras is both large and beautiful, 7.75 x 6 inches, and polished to reveal the inner chambers which are colored in caramel and brown by tiny calcite crystals. The chamber walls, known as septa, have dissolved to reveal the squiggly patterns of the sutures that once strengthened its shell when it was alive. Its outer living chamber also features wonderful clear quartz crystals. Photos can truly do no justice to this beautiful and ornate specimen.

Dinosaur Footprint, Positive And Negative. This 6.25 x 5.25 inch gray shale slab houses both a positive and negative 5.25 x 3.5 inch Grallator dinosaur footprint. The 200 million year old footprints were found near Granby, Massachusetts and made by meat eating dinosaurs similar to Podokesaurus, whose partial skelton was discovered in the same area. The prints are found on both sides of the slab, with the actual (negative) impression having thinner toes as the mud was apparently very wet and partially collapsed after the dinosaur's foot was withdrawn. The thicker toes on the positive side show some pad detail, as well as claws. This rare double print not only shows the shape of the dinosaur foot, but also the depth of the footprint (0.25 inches).

Early Camel Skull Fossil. Many unusual mammals could be found in present day Nebraska and South Dakota around 30-40 million years ago. A number of their rare and valuable fossils have been found in the White River Badlands where they are uncovered by rain, wind, and frost, but then quickly destroyed unless found and collected. Poebrotherium was one of the very first camels, living over 30 million years ago and originating in North America, not Asia. These early camels lived in herds, were about the size of a sheep, stood around only 30 inches tall, and had longer hind legs for speed. This virtually complete skull is 8 x 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is still positioned on the stone matrix as found in Sioux County, Nebraska. The quality of this rare and important fossil is outstanding with only minor restoration to some of the front teeth.

Golden Ammonites from Holzmaden, Germany. Holzmaden is famous for its yield of excellent 180 million year old preserved fossils, particularly golden ammonites. These ammonites are extinct relatives of octopus and squid that have had their mother of pearl shells replaced with golden colored pyrite over the millions of years that they were buried. This large 19 x 20 inch black shale matrix includes a very large pyritized Hildoceras sp. measuring 10½ inches in diameter. This specimen shows the defining ribbing patterns that indicate the size of the inner chambers. All Holzmaden ammonites have been flattened under the pressure of fossilization and are desirable in that they can be easily mounted and hung if desired.

Hoplolichas Russian Trilobite. Hoplolichas furcifer is one of the most unusual and rare species of light brown trilobites found in the 450 million year old Laba River basin near St. Petersburg, Russia. This museum quality specimen is 2.5 x 1.75 inches, positioned on a 5x4 inch tan matrix block with a spherical cystoid (related to a crinoid). Hoplolichas furcifer was quite possibly a female trilobite (a more ornamented male was found in the same fossil bed) with two barbed horns extending backward from the cephalon (head), two long spines behind its compound eyes, as well as rows of sharp spines along the center and both sides of its body. Even the tiniest detail is preserved, such as individual calcite lenses of the compound eyes and small bumps or postules scattered on the head and body. This scarcely found trilobite is rarely offered and in great demand for its beauty alone.

Lot 1608
Huge 6-Inch T-Rex Tooth. This T-Rex tooth, found in an ancient river or lake bed of the 65-67 million year old Hell Creek Formation in South Dakota, is one of the largest ever to be auctioned. It is a shed tooth that broke off at the root level while the dinosaur was feeding. All T-Rex teeth are shed teeth, other than those found on the few dozen partial skeletons that have been located. The root of a T-Rex tooth was approximately twice as long as the exposed enamel part, which would have made this tooth 18 inches if the root was included. This gigantic tooth was found in several pieces, missing its tip as well as about half of one side. Because of its enormous size and importance, about 30% was professionally restored, mostly adding the 1.25 inch tip and filling cracks in the missing sections. The tooth was then placed back in the 8 x 6.5 inch matrix layer where it was found, which also included bone fragments of other dinosaurs. Although not perfect, with just traces of serrations, this tooth is very important in its ability to convey the massive size and thickness of the T-Rex's teeth and reflect the fact that the T-Rex is considered to have had the largest biting pressure of any known creature that has ever lived.

Large Ground Sloth Claw. Ground sloths grew to a great size before becoming extinct. Paramylodon harlani was more than 6 feet tall and lived 1-2 million years ago in Alachua County, Florida. This gigantic, rare 8 x 2 inch long, slightly curved claw is much larger than usually found and has a custom made wooden stand for display. These huge claws were used for defense against predators and to dig up roots. Ground sloths have an important place in the history of American paleontology as president Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter in August 1796 about a large ground sloth claw that he found. The extinct species was later named Megalonyz jeffersoni after him and marked the beginning of vertebrate paleontology in the United States.

Mammal Deathtrap Assemblage. This large 17 x 11½ x 7½ inch original block of rock found in China's Gansu Province contains an amazing array of both carnivore and prey skulls and bones from the mid Miocene era. These early mammals were trapped in quicksand much like those found in the La Brea Tar Pits. Herbivores would get trapped, followed by carnivores, and all would sink to the bottom of the quicksand lake. This remarkable 10-15 million year old assemblage contains one complete 7 inch long upper and lower skull and several vertebrae of the extinct fox, vulpes sinensis, and also one 8 inch long near complete hyena sinensis skull, along with a second 5 inch partial upper skull. The prey include partial mandibles and a complete lower leg with foot bones from at least two extinct species of deer, as well as large vertebrae and a 5 inch long partial jaw of large 1 inch teeth from a very large rhino-like herbivore. Original museum quality blocks such as this are very rare as they normally are broken apart for the skulls.

Mosasaur Teeth And Jaw From Morocco. Considered the T-Rex of the seas, Mosasaurs were the largest and fiercest predators of Cretaceous waters 70-80 million years ago. The largest of their kind, Mosasaurus anectons, was found in the phosphate mines of Khoribga, Morocco.

Housed on a complete 35 x 10 inch matrix, this huge jaw segment is 33 inches long, with 6 huge teeth. The longest tooth measures over 3 inches, not including the root still embedded in the jaw bone. There is also a small replacement tooth emerging near the back of the jaw where a large tooth was broken off during feeding. Mosasaurs, like other reptiles, continued to replace teeth as they were lost. This is an opportunity to own an impressive lower jaw from a 30 foot long Mosasaur that would sell for over $1 million if complete.

Pair Of Dinosaur Feathers. At 125-135 million years old, these two possible dinosaur feathers are some of the oldest feathers known, exceeded in age only by the 150 million year old Archaeopterix bird feather from Solnhofen. Both of these feathers are symmetric which means they are not flight feathers such as those found on birds. They were found in a fossilized volcanic lake bed in Liaoning in Northeastern China, a site where many types of feathered dinosaurs have been discovered. Although it is impossible to distinguish between bird and dinosaur feathers, the only flightless animals found in Liaoning have been theropod dinosaurs, so the probability is great that they indeed come from dinosaurs. Both feathers have remarkable detail showing delicate veining of the individual barbs. The largest feather is 2.25 inches long and very thin, probably a long tail feather or a plumage feather. The second feather is a 0.8 inch long symmetric body feather with very delicate veining. These valuable and rare specimens are housed in an 8 x 6.5 inch Riker mount.

Lot 1629
Rare Dinosaur Skin With Soft Tissue. Dinosaur skin is the rarest and most coveted of dinosaur fossils, being preserved under only extraordinary circumstances. For skin to be preserved, the dinosaur had to have been completely covered by fine mud sediments within a day or so of dying to avoid bacterial breakdown of the skin and soft tissue that would otherwise occur immediately. The skin texture was impressed in detail in the soft clay, forming a natural mold which was later filled by more muddy sand, creating a natural cast which remained intact for over 65 million years, even after the skin and other soft tissue was destroyed by bacteria. This large section of dinosaur skin and soft tissue from an Edmontosaurus duckbilled dinosaur is between 65 and 70 million years old and was found along with some fragmented bones of that species in Montana's Hell Creek Formation. The soft tissue could be muscle or glands, but it is impossible to say for certain as it is not known what section of the body the specimen came from.

This large section of matrix is 7 x 5 x 3.5 inches and has two large patches of positive skin impressions, with the largest light brown impression being 5 x 4 inches and the second, on the back side, 4.5 x 2.5 inches. The skin was wrapped around the sides of the limestone block and its impression has the usual hexagonal scaly appearance. This section came from a larger 3-D stone block and the soft tissue was not revealed until the stone was broken. There are two areas of soft tissue on this specimen. The first is a large 2 x 1.75 inch dark brown structure on the side, which lies about 0.75 inches below the skin layer above it. The second is a dark striated section, possibly muscle, 1.5 x 0.5 inches, just below the above skin layer. National Geographic's recent show "Dinosaur Autopsy" called their similar find of a more complete Edmontosaurus with soft tissue one of the most important discoveries of the decade and a specimen of dinosaur skin with soft tissue preservation may never be offered for sale again.

Spinosaurus Tooth And Toe. Made famous in "Jurassic Park II" as the dinosaur that killed a T-Rex, the enormous theopod dinosaur Spinosaurus is easily identified by the huge sail on its back. Despite its prominent image, however, it remains enigmatic as no skeleton has ever been found in an even close to complete state. Spinosaurus is mostly known from its teeth which are fairly common, but usually broken or ugly. This large 3.5 inch tooth is a lovely brown color with a 1.25 inch root. Its end shows some slight natural wear from use when the dinosaur was alive. Also included is a rare 3.7 inch long foot claw with complete tip, along with a 2 inch long toe bone. The toe claw has equally excellent blood grooves and bone structure. Claws are much rarer to find than teeth as teeth could be replaced unlike claws. This 80 million year old dinosaur was found in the Kem Kem Valley near Taouz, Morocco and the Algerian border. These museum quality fossils are housed in an 8 x 6" Riker mount.

The largest of these beasts is 13.5 inches long and 10 inches in diameter. The other two specimens are 11.5 and 12 inches long. Found in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, the three complete trilobites plus a partial fourth have an attractive orange rust color due to the iron-oxide limonite, making them nicely contrast the gray matrix. They are virtually complete with only minor restoration of a few of the spines on the pygidiums. With most trilobites measuring only an inch or so in length, finding a mass mortality slab of multiple giant trilobites such as this is a very rare occurrence.

Three Primitive Amphibians. Discosauriscus pulcmerismus was an early 260 million year old amphibian unrelated to modern amphibians that somewhat resembled a salamander with a huge head and rough scaly skin. It was an active predator in lakes and shallow pools. This 13 x 11 inch plate features one 8 inch long specimen from the ventral position showing rows of small sharp teeth and one 7 inch specimen with a dorsal view showing the solid bony skull. Also on the same slab is a ventral view 6 inch long Microperpetron amphibian showing some teeth. These museum quality specimens were found in a quarry near Letovice, Czech Republic.

Three Unhatched Dinosaur Eggs In Partial Nest. The eggs remain in the same position on the 17 x 12 inch red limestone matrix where they were deposited by their mother Duckbill dinosaur 70-80 million years ago in China's Henan Province. What makes the nest exceptional is the quality of the eggs, with each having between 80-90 percent of their original shells. In terms of size, the eggs are as large as Duckbill dinosaurs get, measuring 6.5 x 6 inches. We cannot be sure of their particular species as no embryos have ever been found in eggs of this shape in China. However, similar oval-shaped eggs found in the U.S. have contained embryos identifying them as Duckbills. Dinosaur eggs in general are becoming more difficult to locate and completely original, untouched partial nests are in great demand.

Triceratops Brow Horn. Known for its two long brow horns and for living at the same time as T-Rex, the Triceratops is one of the most popular dinosaurs. This 7 x 5 inch brow horn, with a piece of skull still attached, is from a juvenile Triceratops as indicated by the fact that the species' horns continued to grow as they aged. This is an excellent specimen, nearly complete with only some minor restoration to repair some cracks. The small holes in the horn and skull, known as horn cores, represent where blood flowed to these areas. In life the horn would have been covered in keratin (like our fingernails) and would have been about 30 percent larger. This excellent display fossil is 65-66 million years old and was found on a private ranch in Montana.

Walliserops Trident Trilobite. Walliserops is one of the most bizarre of the spiny trilobites found in Morocco. What makes it so strange is the trident-shaped appendage on the front of its head. What this was used for exactly is pure conjecture, but digging in the soft ocean sand is a likely option. The preparation on this complete 2.25 x 1 inch, 380 million year old trilobite from Ikelel Gara in southern Morocco is as good as it gets with a clear trident, rows of tiny spines including long curved spines on the backs of its compound eyes and excellent outstretched positioning on the 3.5 x 3 inch light gray matrix. The only minor imperfection is a slight separation of the pygidium (tail) from the rest of the body which occurred at the time of the trilobite's death.

Woolly Mammoth Carving. This finely detailed 4 x 2.7 inch Woolly Mammoth figure was carved out of a gem-quality piece of 30,000-100,000 year old fossilized Mammoth ivory found in Siberia. The body of the Mammoth is slightly curved, much like the tusk it was carved from, and is a lovely cream color with hints of blue-green (due to iron) on its trunk and back. The two tusks are 1.5 inches long and pure white Mammoth ivory, which is quite rare. The figure has been professionally carved in a walking position with intricate hair detailing and comes positioned on a polished wood stand.

Woolly Mammoth Hair And Ivory. The hair from this 30,000 year old Woolly Mammoth comes from the only specimen available from about a dozen preserved Mammoth carcasses that have been found in the frozen permafrost of the Indi-girka Basin of Siberia. This specimen contains much more hair than is usually offered and has examples of the long reddish-brown hair that covered the Mammoth's body, as well as a clump of the soft tan colored inner hair. This rare Mammuthis primigenius hair specimen comes from the collection of Dr. Gennady Baryshnikov of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, Russia. Also included on the 12 x 8 inch Riker mount is a 5.5 x 1.5 inch polished section of fossilized Mammoth ivory.
