Lot 1407
Pair of Clodion "Wine Goddess" Bronze Statues. Vintage late 19th century, signed Clodion at the feet of the figures, overall height 20 inches, including a 2 inch marble base. Two different poses of classical semi-nude wine goddesses wearing diaphanous gowns, one holding a wine jug, the other a bunch of grapes. Each marble base with chips, otherwise very good condition with age appropriate wear and tone.
Clodion (1738-1814) was a world famous scupltor in his time and his works were reproduced long after his death at Nancy.

Large bronze statue by E. Rousseau, late 19th century. An attractive ca. 1880s bronze sculpture, 22 inches high, depicting a village fisherman at the end of a day's labor, with a net and a basket of fish on his shoulder, signed "E Rousseau" on the base. Very good condition with only normal signs of wear as appropriate with age.

Large bronze statue by E. Rousseau, late 19th century. Cibolero. A grizzled mountain man, replete in fringed buckskin and feather hat, concentrates on the long shot that will bring his target down. This vignette of the old buffalo days of the American West is chock full of carefully observed details heightening the authenticity of the scene. Base with cast inscription: "CIBOLERO, copyright 1972, Richter." Height: 9-1/2".

Hank Richter is an Ohio-born artist, and later resident of Arizona, whose devotion to the themes of the Old and contemporary West has made him a favorite with collectors of Arizona and Western theme art. His talents are expressed in several art media -- most notably in water color and bronze sculpture.

Christie, Keith. Bronze Horse Sculpture, 1975. A striking bronze 10½" tall, 13" long sculpture of a horse in full saddle with bit, bridle, and attached wire reigns. The stately animal has calm, gentle appearance and the overall detailing of its body and gear is intricate. The horse's legs extend to a textured bronze base into which the artist's name, the date, and its 15/50 edition are etched. Mounted on an 11¾" x 1¼" x 5½" polished gray-green marble foundation.

A Fine Sculptural Study of a Tiger. Japan, Meiji Period, 1868-1912. Said to be by Seiya. The animal advances in an almost stretching pose, which vividly reveals both its supple grace and coiled power held in restraint. Heightening the realism is its gilt, inset glass eyes, and choice multi-hued patina. Rectangular cartouche on belly with maker's signature. Length: 22". A splendid study of this most handsome of the large cats.

Clodion Sculpture of a Satyr with Woman and Child. Bronze, late 19th-early 20th century, signed Clodion at the back. A satyr seated on a rock offers grapes to a nude woman and child. Height 18 1/2" on a stepped marble base to an overall height of 21". Normal age wear and tone, otherwise very good condition.

Alonzo, Dominique. Carrying Water. A young women in "Near Eastern" garb, sculpted in bronze, her bust, feet, and hands carved in ivory, descends a pair of steps, carrying two water vessels. Her lovely features framed by a pendant bead necklace, a similar elaborate girdle enclosing her bodice. Right side of base signed in casting: "D. Alonzo," Old inked number underneath base: "5001." Piece well-preserved, with faint age cracks to some of the ivory. One hand and vessel a little loose, and in need of tightening. Height: 12-3/4".

Alonzo was born in Paris in the late 19th century, and was a pupil of Falguiere. He exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1912 till 1926. In his later works he often explored the seedy side of Berlin Night life.

Stylish Sculpture of a Striding Elephant. Japan, Meiji Period, 1868-1912. An excellent study, finely crafted, with careful attention to musculature and skin texture. Set into the mouth are two realistic tusks of darkly toned ivory (one is loose and should be glued). Piece overall in fine condition. Height: 9-3/4".
Estimated Value $750 - 950.
Perhaps the work of Seiya, although unsigned. Cf. Sotheby's, Olympia London (07-17-03), lot 81.

Bronze Sculpture of a Standing American Plains Bison. United States, ca. 1880's - 1920's. The creature stands simply, its head turned a little to the right. The piece is mounted on a contemporary base with molded edges. The animal must have been a favored memento, as it now has an attractive "handling" patina, indicating it was touched and petted over many years. No indications of sculptor or casting firm noted. Overall length: 9-3/4".

Bronze of an Owl in Flight. United States, c. 1992. A dynamic study, boldly modeled, of a Great Horned Owl launching itself from a branch, its prey spotted off to the side. Sculpture with integral socle base, mounted onto black marble (a few minor chips to bottom edge). No artist's signature, but incised copyright of 1992 cast into the base. Height: 16". A handsome desk piece.
