Lot 1054
Illustration Showing Deck Plans and Cross Sections of the British Slave Ship "Brookes." The 7½" x 16" fold-out is part of a small volume which holds An Abridgement of the Evidence Delivered Before A Select Committee of the House of Commons, In the Years 1790 and 1791, On the Part of the Petitioners for the Abolition of the Slave-Trade, London: Printed by James Phillips, George Yard, Lombard, 1792, 24pp. Dimensions of the stowage areas of the slave ship are given, which show that "every man slave is to be allowed six feet by one foot four inches for room, every woman five feet ten, by one foot four, every boy five feet by one foot two, and every girl four feet six by one foot….the floors are not only covered with bodies, but these bodies actually touch each other…" This illustration helped bring about the abolition of slavery in Great Britain in 1807.

The illustration is toned, with a ragged top margin and paper loss at lower right margin, not affecting the two large diagrams (one small diagram on the back is affected). This illustration is normally sold separately from the volume; it is rare to find one still bound in the volume. Also in the same volume are The Lawfulness of Defensive War Upon Christian Principles London, 1798, 36pp, An Address to the People of Great Britain, on the Propriety of Abstaining from West India Sugar and Rum, 12th edition, with additions, 12pp, and the same title, 4th edition corrected, 1791, 12pp. Rebound with marbled boards and leather spine and corners. Very good.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
