Ben-Gurion, David (1876-1973) One of the most influential figures in modern Zionism; founder of the State of Israel; first (1948-1952) and third prime minister (1955-1962) of Israel. Two ALsS, 1p each, 7½"x6" and 7¾"x5½", Hakirya and Tel Aviv, 1955 July 8 and 1964 Dec. 3. Both are very fine, with normal folds; the two are matted with a commemorative bank note bearing Ben-Gurion's likeness and issued by the American Israel Numismatic Association in 1988; framed to an overall size of 26¾"x22".

Both letters have excellent content. The first, written as Minister of Defense on personal stationery to Yaakov Riftin, a member of the Knesset, says, in part: "You do not have permission to speak in the name of the Mapai [the political party which was dominant in Israeli politics until the mid 1960s, when it merged into the Alignment] voters. We live in a land in which the voter is definitely free to vote for whomever he wants….We have walked along this path from the beginning of the Zionist enterprise….I am certain that this path will be a blessing for both the workers and the people…."

The second letter, to Mordechai Soskis, says in part: "The Party is dear to me….But the people and its existence depend on the purity of the State, and if I am to stand before these two things - I will not hesitate for one moment, and I will fight for the purity of the State…."

Ben-Gurion, David (1886-1973) Letter to an Arab discussing the impending war with Egypt. Typed letter in Hebrew signed "D. Ben-Gurion," as Minister of Defense, one page, 7 7/8" x 6", May 14, 1955, on State of Israel letterhead, addressed "Dear Friend." He writes: "I have received your letter, and your loyalty is very precious to me. Following the coup d'état which was carried out by the present heads of Egypt, the Government which I headed welcomed the rebels against King Farouq, and I expressed my hope that the revolution would bring blessings to the Egyptian people, the Egyptian peasants, the Egyptian laborers, and would pave a new road of peace for itself. It is regrettable that the heads of Egypt have disappointed our hope, and the hope of the Egyptian people, as the heads of Egypt have repudiated their people and cast it down, and they are now seeking to embroil it in a war with Israel. I am certain and convinced that the Egyptian tyrant will pay a heavy price for his aggression." Fine.

German Propaganda Book - Der Giftpilz. Ein Stuermerbuch fuer Jung und Alt. Nuremberg: Verlag der Stürmer, 1938, 10½" x 8¼", 64pp. Pictorial covers over linen boards, which are worn; page 51/52 is present but separated and page 53/54 is missing; 17 full-page, vivid illustrations by the Nazi artist Fips, most with grotesque depictions of Jewish men. The book was published by Julius Streicher, who published propaganda in his newspapers ("Der Stuermer" and "Fraenkische Tageszeitung") and in books such as this one to incite the German people to hatred and persecution of the Jews and to what he hoped would be their extermination as a race. After the war, he was tried at Nuremberg, convicted of crimes against humanity and hanged on October 16, 1946. The Allies destroyed many copies of Der Giftpilz; consequently, it is rare today.

Seventeen short stories present and reinforce, time after time, the idea that Jewish people are bad, and that good German children should hate them. An interesting sub-text is that children should "teach" their parents this awful truth ("I'm finding out that one can learn even from you children," a mother admits). Thematically, the book is organized around an anti-semitic attack on three fronts: physical appearance, religious beliefs, and moral values. In the first chapter, a young boy picks mushrooms with his mother, who explains to him that there are good and bad people, just as there are edible and poisonous mushrooms, that the Jews are a "poison" within Germany, the Devil in human form and that they pose a threat not only to German survival, but to the survival of the world.

Some of the chapters have a decidedly pornographic slant, such as "What Hans and Else Experienced With a Stranger" and "Inge's Visit to A Jewish Doctor." Other chapters include: "How to Tell A Jew," "How a German Peasant was Driven from House and Farm," "How Jewish Traders Cheat," How Jews Torment Animals," and the last chapter: "Without Solving the Jewish Question No Salvation for Mankind." The image of the Jewish monster perpetrating misfortune is presented at the end of each episode in the form of a short poem, which capsulizes the specific immoral act allegedly committed by a Jew, connects all Jews to the Devil, and serves to warn the reader against the ever-present Jewish threat.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 4,000.
