Austin, Stephen (1793-1836) Texas colonizer; secretary of state of the Republic of Texas (1836); considered by many the Father of Texas. DS ("S.F. Austin") as a Commissioner for Texas, 1kp, 10½" x 8½", New Orleans, 1836, Jan 11. Fine; small paper loss in text from cancellation, not affecting signature. Texian Loan No. 370 is issued to Thos. D. Carneul, noted receipt of "Thirty-Two Dollars, the First Instalment on a Loan of Three Hundred and Twenty Dollars…to the Government of Texas for Five Years…." Boldly signed by Austin and countersigned by fellow commissioners B.T. Archer and Wm. H. Wharton.

Burr, Aaron (1756-1836) American politician and adventurer; Vice President of the United States (1801-1805); best known for mortally wounding Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. ALS ("A. Burr"), 1p, 9" x 7½", Albany, 1800 Mar. 3 To John D. Dickinson in Lansingburgh, asking Dickinson to come to Albany to discuss their business which "may take some hours--it will be best that you come early…" The letter is affixed to heavier paper, and the address panel has been cut from the integral leaf and affixed below. Dickinson (1767-1841) served as U.S. representative from New York from 1819-1823.

Clinton, DeWitt (1769-1828) Mayor of New York City and Governor of New York; "Father of the Erie Canal." Partly printed DS as Governor, 1p, 10" x 15½", Albany, 1819 July 8. Appointing William Wheaton "Captain of a Company in the 51st Regiment of Infantry of our said state…." Embossed "Excelsior" seal. Very good; some edge splits at folds.

Frémont, John C. 1868 Texas Debt Certificate for $1,000 signed on the verso ("J.C. Frémont"), 5¼" x 7¾". The certificate is headed "Southern Trans-Continental Railroad. Texas Division--From Jefferson to El Paso. Construction Series 'A'." The financing of this Texas Division was to be accomplished by the sale of bonds based on a grant to Frémont by Texas of eight million acres of land; however, the French agents employed for the purpose of selling the bonds falsely stated that they were guaranteed by the U.S. government, and Frémont, although not directly involved with the deception, was prosecuted by France in agsentia. Uncancelled and in excellent condition.

Note on verso shows that the photo was signed as Attorney General in Washington, D.C. in 1961. Upper left corner is creased and the tip missing, not affecting the image; otherwise fine.

Randolph, Beverley (1755-1797) First Governor of Virginia after it became a state (1788 to 1791). LS as Governor of Virginia, 1p, 12¼" x 7½", In Council, 1788 Dec. 2. Written to the governor of another state, enclosing "a letter from the General Assembly of this State" [not present] with a copy of the application "to be made to the Congress of the United States, which I request …you to lay before the Legislature of your State…." Very good; a few archival repairs, not affecting the large signature; integral address leaf is not present.

[Seward, William H.]. 15½" x 12" lithographic profile portrait of President Lincoln's Secretary of State, William H. Seward (1801-1872), based on a photo by Brady and engraved by A.H. Ritchie. Seward survived an attack in the Lincoln assassination plot and was later responsible for the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.

Seward, Reverdy Johnson, Francis Spinner, Thomas H. Benton, Fernando Wood, Thomas T. Crittenden, T.J. Pendergast, Huey P. Long, J. Edgar Hoover, Harry Hopkins, Alf Landon, Hubert Humphrey, Ted Kennedy, Joe McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, Strom Thurmond, George C. Wallace, and many others. Overall fine. Should be seen in person.

Atchison, Calhoun, Webster & Other U.S. Senators. Sheet of pale yellow paper, 9½" x 7", signed by several U.S. Senators, all but Calhoun signing his state after his name, c. 1840-1850: "J M Mason / Virginia, J.C. Calhoun, Danl. Webster of Massachusetts, Roger S. Baldwin of Connecticut, Hopkins S. Turney / Tennessee, Willie P. Mangum of North Carolina."

Webster and Calhoun were bitter political enemies; David Rice Atchison was "President for one day" between Polk and Taylor, and Senator J.M. Mason became CSA commissioner to Great Britain and France. It is unknown why this group of such strong but divergent but divergent views all signed this sheet, but it appears complete and unaltered or cut. Fine.

Very good to fine. All three men were unsuccessful presidential candidates.
