Earhart, Amelia (1897-1937?) American aviation pioneer and author; she set many records, including first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She disappeared over the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island during an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937. Sepia-toned IPS in black ink, 6¾" x 5", n.p., 1934. Earhart poses with her plane, dressed in her aviation suit. The inscription reads, "With best wishes." Minor pasting residue on verso, else fine.

[Early Aviation]. TLS by B[enjamin] D. Foulois on War Department letterhed, as Chief of the Air Corps, Washington, 7" x 8", Washington, 1933 June 28, about a possible visit to Wright Field; Foulois helped Orville Wright test the 1909 Flyer, which was then bought by the War Department. Tape remnants in margins; bold signature. With Cover Signed and carried by Roscoe Turner in the 1934 Mac Robertson International air race, London-Melbourne. He took third place. Time: 3 days, 21 hours, 5 minutes, 2 seconds. Also, Covers from Pan Am Airways’ first direct air mail flight from Bangkok to Rangoon and Rangoon to Basra and three early photo postcards of a biplane, labelled "Hamilton at El Paso, Tex."

Three items: an 8" x 10" photo of Czar Nicholas II inspecting the "Grand" with Sikorsky, signed "I. Sikorsky Jan. 26, 1972"); a picture postcard of Sikorsky’s Flying Dreadnaught for the U.S. Navy, signed ("I. Sikorsky Oct. 23 1941"); and a 1988 FDC featuring Sikorsky. All fine.

With his brother Wilbur, he invented and built the first successful powered, piloted and controlled airplane which they flew on December 17, 1903 near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Postcard PS in black ink, n.p., n.d. A small oval portrait of Orville Wright is to the left of a photo of The Wright Flyer, with imprint of E.J. Gadshall, 1910. Printed at lower left is "The Machine Descending." One light crease touching "O" and "r" in the signature and minor corner wear.

Postcard PS in black ink, n.p., n.d. A small oval portrait of Wilbur Wright is to the right of a photo of The Wright Flyer. An unknown hand wrote across the top, "This card was flown at the Boston-Harvard Aero Meet, Sept. 1910 by." Boldly signed. Wilbur's signature is rare; he died of typhoid fever in 1912, while Orville lived until 1948.
