[Young, Brigham] American Bank Note Engraved Plate. By Mark Baldwin, 7" x 5½". The original envelope is present (soiled with several edge tears) and has an image from the plate affixed to it; written in red ink at left is "NY 1087." The number is also on the plate. A separate image of the plate gives the engraver's name and the date 1891. The portrait of Young is a well-known, seated pose holding his cane in his right hand. Plate has a couple of minor dings, else fine.

{Young, Brigham] Le Tabac, Inscribed to Young by the Author. Book on the evils of tobacco, in French by Dr. H.A. Depierris, inscribed: "to the honorable president Brigham Young respectfully the author H.A. Depierris." The book is "Physiologie Sociale. Le Tabac Qui Contient Le Plus Violent des Poisons: La Nicotine…." (Paris: Librairie de la Société des Gens de Lettres, 1876), 192pp. Paper covers are separated but present and pages are still uncut; string binding is loose in places and totally separated between pages 80 and 81. Interior is clean and legible. The main questions posed by this book on tobacco are whether or not nicotine, "the most violent of poisons" shortens life and is the cause of the physical and moral degeneration of modern societies.

Gray cloth covers are in poor condition, there is damp staining throughout, most of it in the lower borders, not affecting text, pages 5/6 and 7/8 are loose, the latter with several edge tears, and some pencil notations; with previous owner's name on title page (which has some edge chipping) and a front end page.

[Young, Brigham] Photo of Beehive and Lion House. Cabinet photo, 4½" x 7", by C.W. Carter's New Mammoth Gallery and View Emporium, Salt Lake City, Utah, of the two residences, constructed in 1854 and 1856 as homes for Brigham Young, territorial governor and second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Beehive House (so named because a beehive represented industry) served as the executive mansion of the Territory of Utah from 1852 to 1855 and was Brigham Young's official residence where he entertained important guests. The Lion House housed up to twelve of Young's wives and their children. One small knick to mount, else fine.

Boudoir photo, 8½" x 5¼", of the home built in 1856 for Young (1877, who was governor of the Utah Territory and second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1847-1877). No printer's imprint; pencil notation on verso identifying the house, which got its name from the stone statue of the reclining lion over the front entrance. Truman O. Angell, Young's brother-in-law and architect of the temple, was the architect of The Lion House, which is located on South Temple Street.and is built of adobe and sandstone. Fine condition.

This view was taken from the street and gives an idea of the size of the home; a horse and buggy can be seen on the dirt street. Fine.

Truman O. Angell, Young's brother-in-law and architect of the temple, was the architect of The Lion House, which is located on South Temple Street and is built of adobe and sandstone. Lorenzo Snow, LDS Church president from 1898 to 1901, and Joseph F. Smith, president from 1901 to 1918, also used Lion House as their residence.

Authorization for publication was given by Young's oldest living son and eight of his wives, "in order to correct the great wrong done, not only the family of President Young, but the polygamist families of all the Latter-day Saints." [Young, Brigham] Silk Ribbon with Salt Lake City Temple. Colorful silk ribbon, 9½" x 2½" featuring a black and white portrait of Young inside a wreath, below his name and above an image of the temple, which has "Temple Salt Lake City" below. Lower corners of the ribbon are frayed and loose and a ¼" x ¾" area is missing, just below the word "City"; this can be minimized by folding the lower edge under; there is also a horizontal stain above the temple; otherwise attractive.

Young chose the site for the temple on July 28, 1847, shortly after the arrival of the first Latter-day Saint settlers in the Great Salt Lake Valley. The ground-breaking ceremony for the temple took place on February 14, 1853, and it was completed and dedicated in April 1893 (Young died in 1877). It is considered the most important temple for Mormons.

[Young, Brigham] Stereo View of the Beehive House. Double photo on a 3½" x 7" mount, showing the residence and the gate and wall surrounding the house. The Beehive was Brigham Young's official residence and served as the executive mansion of the Territory of Utah from 1852 to 1855. Two other LDS Church presidents lived in the Beehive: Lorenzo Snow (1898-1901),and Joseph F. Smith (1901-1918); both men died there. The Beehive house was restored in 1960 and is now a museum.

From the Bible, Book of Mormon, Book of Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price and Articles of Faith, 6¼" x 4½", n.d., 288pp. No title page and pages 15-20 are torn out; leather covers and cloth spine are worn; much of the interior is loosening from the spine and some pages have light damp stains, which do not affect legibility. Preface states, "…designed to make the Compendium sufficiently elaborate to give it a wide range of usefulness, and…not make it so large as to be burdensome to the Elders who travel and preach the Gospel." Various subjects are discussed, with references to the Mormon holy books, so that both inexperienced and more advanced students can "acquire a thorough knowledge of the subjects treated." Rare.

With an 8-page booked, "A Missionary Experience" by Jensen, who served as Assistant Church Historian and president of the Scandinavian Mission, published on the occasion of his 87th birthday and signed by him at top right; a damp stain affects a few words of text but not legibility.

Topics include "The Mormon Kingdom," and "Building Temples." The first article is written as "Correspondence to the Chicago Times of E.S. Goodrich, Esq."; it favorably compares crime statistics for Mormons to the other inhabitants of Utah Territory and discusses "divine toleration" for polygamy. It also includes an eleven-stanza poem, "The Missionary's Farewell to Zion," by Robert Marshall. Very good; chipping at right edge affects nothing.

The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, June 10, 1854. Edited and published by S.W. Richards in London, printed in Liverpool, paginated 355-368. The issue is devoted to the "Death of President Willard Richards," taken from the Deseret News. Each page has a black mourning border. Richards (1804-1859) served as Joseph Smith's private secretary and as LDS historian, he was responsible for keeeping Smith's diary. In 1847 he became second counselor to Brigham Young. He organized the provisional government of the State of Deseret and was appointed the territorial secretary. In 1850 he was appointed founding editor of the Deseret News. Excellent condition.

Ogden, Utah Political Pinback Button For Theodore Roosevelt. 31mm. A hand holds five cards. One has a picture of Teddy Roosevelt; the other four say Sound Money, Expansion, Protection, and Prosperity. At the bottom is "Stand Pat!" The face has some crinkles. On the back is "Compliments of 'The Hub' Ogden, Utah." The first Mormons to settle in the Ogden area were sent by Brigham Young in late 1847 and early 1848.

Edited by John Taylor, who would become the third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, following Brigham Young. The Times and Seasons was the periodical of the church; it was published in Nauvoo, Illinois, from November 1839 until February 1846. Fine except for light overall toning and a few very faint damp stains.
