Refunding Certificates

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3443
1879, $10 Refunding Certificate. . Fr-214. . KL-395. RCGS graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated 64 PQ. In order to make government securities more popular and more easily within the reach of the average citizen, Congress passed the Act of February 26, 1879.

This Act made it possible for the Treasury to issue to the public the refunding Certificates of 10 Dollar denomination. These certificates bore interest at the rate of four per cent per year and at the time of issue, it was meant for the interest to accrue indefinitely, as no time limit was set. This was the inducement for the public to keep on holding these notes.

However, in 1907, an Act of Congress stopped the interest on these notes as of July 1 of that year. By that time, the interest alone amounted to $11.30 and therefore the redemption value of these notes today is $21.30, more than double the original face value. Many were subsequently redeemed, hence the scarcity of this Type today.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

His service included the Mexican-American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War. 1896, $5 Silver Certificate. . Fr-268. . KL-238. PMG graded Choice Uncirculated 64, Exceptional Paper Quality A real charmer, and consdered to be America's most beautiful paper money series. This note has for its allegorical scheme Electricity as a central force in nature and commerce. The paper is very bright and crisp, while the colors are exceptional as well. This Daniel Manning $20 with the beautiful diamond back reverse is the only AU specimen listed in Generke's census with none rated higher. PMG's population is this single AU-55 note with none higher

Daniel Manning (May 16, 1831 - December 24, 1887) was an American businessman, journalist, and politician. Born in Albany, New York, Manning's political career was very successful. He served as the chairman of the New York Democratic committee from 1881-84, and later was appointed U.S. Secretary of the Treasury by President Grover Cleveland in March 1885. Manning resigned from this post in April 1887 due to ill health. His portrait on the 1886-series Silver Certificates paid him a great honor since he was still alive at the time.
