Lot 2590
1900 $20 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. Well struck and untoned. A great looking coin. Completely original with spectacular mirror brilliance supporting pulsating misty golden devices. Clearly, this coin is in the "ultra" cameo class. While a refreshing look of fresh-from-the-dies indicators includes everything one would expect from the $20 Liberty design and strong grade assignment by NGC. In former days, the mirror luster on a Proof double eagle was enough to determine a coin's status. Scant regard was given to possible hairlines or marks. Not anymore. And today, just as important is the strike: there is no deviation in the sharp relief seen, not even in the centers of the coin or on the 13 beads or pearls that line the edge of Liberty's coronet or crown. Only 124 struck. Pop 2; 3 finer; 2 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 9116) .

Of the 124 pieces minted, we estimate that perhaps 50 to 75 still exist. The 1900 is on a par with most other post-1900 Proofs in rarity and availability, but truly, availability is not all that great since these tend to be locked away in "name" collections or in museum strong-boxes. Ultra Cameo frosted Proof 64 grade examples are therefore especially desirable.
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.

Lot 2594
1903 $20 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64. A flashy Proof $20 Gold Coin. Only 158 Proofs struck. Most 1903 Proofs are the same, and few show cameo frost on the devices. Few pieces were struck this year, of which a small percentage survive today in the quality offered here. This particular date has the obverse field deeply basined, from the die-making process, adding more curvature than normal, and giving an especially pleasing reflective effect but also causing a narrowing at the bridge of Liberty's nose from the way the obverse die had to be positioned to achieve the desired mirror polish. Even if you do not contemplate buying it, check it out for the aesthetic experience, perhaps comparing it to the other Proofs offered from time to time in national sales. The present piece combines beauty, rarity, and everything else desirable. Certainly it will be exciting when the moment of sale occurs. This glittering Proof twenty is housed in NGC holder 1942255-001. Pop 10; None finer at NGC. (PCGS # 9119) .

1904 $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely golden toning on both sides. A stunning Gem that will certainly attract the foremost collectors who always pay attention to the satiny luster and gorgeous surfaces on these coins. As a date, 1904 will hardly raise a stir. However, in this MS66 grade, any Liberty twenty becomes an object of much discussion. The color is, as internet viewers and readers of the catalog will see by the photographs, a very attractive shade. Close examination will note exceptional smoothness and pristine luster on the cheek, as well, and in all areas of the field on both sides. We rarely use superlatives, but in this case, a big word is warranted: a tremendous opportunity to put away a very attractive condition rarity! Pop 188; 1 finer in 67 (PCGS # 9045) .

1905 $20 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64. A flashy brilliant Proof. Smooth surface with full metallic, reddish-gold features. The strike is 100% razor-sharp, so keen-edged in fact, first-time inspection requires having to give it a double-take if the viewer has never seen one of these boldly attractive double eagles before in Proof quality. All Proofs are from a single die with centered date in which the left base of 1 is left of center of a dentil. From the same new reverse hub as those of 1900-07 in which the eagle's neck is smooth rather than ruffled. The coin is set in NGC holder 1996341-002. Only 92 Proofs struck. Pop 3; 1 finer in 65.
