1803 S-265 R4 Large Date and Fraction. VG-10. Slightly sharper with a series of thin cuts on the edge at S-OF-A. These marks do not show on the obverse and are barely visible on the reverse. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and show only trivial contact marks. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown with hints of bluish steel overtone from a very light cleaning. The date and legends are strong except for weakness due to die failure at STAT. M-LDS, Breen state VI.

1804 S-266b R5. NGC graded Fine-15. Rather glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are nice but not perfectly smooth, although you can't see any corrosion using a strong 16x glass. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few of the usual minor nicks consistent with the grade. Rare MDS, Breen state III, with a cud break at RTY but without the cud at MERIC. EAC grade VG10. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1804 S-266c R2. About Good-3 Plus. Glossy chocolate brown. Smooth surfaces, the only notable defect being an old pinscratch from the throat to the hair ribbon. This scratch is disjointed and blends perfectly into the attractive toning. The date is easily readable, although the bottom of the 4 fades into the rim below, LIBERTY is strong, and at least half the reverse legend is clear. LDS, Breen state IV, with cud breaks at RTY and MERIC.

1804 Restrike. MS-60. Frosty reddish brown with lighter brown in protected areas of the obverse and peeps of original red at the date. No spots, stains, or other defects. Late die state, the reverse rotated 15 degrees CCW from a perfect head-to-foot die orientation. An attractive example of this non-mint product made circa 1860 using scrap mint dies, the obverse from 1803 S-261 and the reverse from 1820 N-12.

There are a few faint hairline scratches in the field near the hair ribbon and a couple barely visible rim nicks on the obverse. The reverse, in contrast, is quite nice and offers excellent eye appeal. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with small splashes of darker olive toning on the obverse. LDS, Breen state III.

MDS with a strong "Comet" flaw in the field behind the head. A nice lower-grade example of this popular die state.

Still one of the sharper examples known of this rare and very popular variety.

There are traces of very shallow reddish verdigris crusted into protected areas and some light contact marks, including a nick in the hair left of the ear and a rim nick over the first T in STATES. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel. The date is bold and the overdate is obvious. The legends are complete and strong. Not perfect by any stretch, but certainly one of the better detailed examples of this rare and extremely popular "Redbook" variety. EDS, Breen state I.

A slightly higher grade may be justified when the color returns to a more natural hue. Called net VF30 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #27806.
