1798 S-159 R3 Style I Hair with Small 8. VF-20. Sharpness EF40 with several rim bruises on each side, including one left of the hair ribbon and two more at CA in AMERICA. There are a few shallow contact marks near the dentils before the throat and a small but obvious dig at the bottom of ME. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the toning is an attractive glossy steel brown and chocolate with a couple small spots of darker olive toning at the ear and throat. E-MDS, Breen state II. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety. Called net VF20 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net F15 and tied for CC#9, his photo #23084.

1798 S-159 R3 Style I Hair with Small 8. Fine-12 Plus. Sharpness VF20 with too many tiny nicks scattered over both sides for the sharpness grade. None of these marks is significant in its own right, but there are too many to ignore. No roughness or verdigris. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with small clouds of darker olive toning mixed in. MDS, Breen state V. The vertical die cracks behind the portrait are strong and a die crack connects the tops of LIB, but the cud break in that area has not formed. Close to F15.

1798 S-166 R1 Style II Hair with Large 8. EF-45. Choice glossy chocolate and lighter steel brown with frosty golden light brown and tan faded down from mint color in protected areas of the reverse. The only defect is a tiny planchet chip at the top of the E in LIBERTY, as struck. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. The arc crack through the fraction and E in UNITED is strong and three small but clearly defined rim cud breaks show over TA in STATES. A premium example of this common variety.

1798 S-171 R4 Style II Hair with Small 8. VF-30. Sharpness near EF40 but a strong glass reveals traces of extremely faint roughness under the attractive glossy steel brown and chocolate toning. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago and but the toning is very attractive and appears quite natural today. There are a couple small, faint spots of darker olive toning in the field under the chin and a few very tiny pitmarks over CE in CENT. None of these defects is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent for the grade. MDS, Breen state IV. Called VF35 and tied for CC#4 in the Breen/Bland condition census. Noyes says VF25 and tied for CC#7, his photo #27829.

The surfaces are mostly smooth with only traces of microscopic roughness on the lower part of the reverse. The notable marks are a small punchmark on the throat and an old vertical scratch in the field before the throat. EDS, Breen state II. Struck 10% off center to K-10.5. The date is complete and clear and the legend on the upper right part of the reverse is strong (so strong it suggests a much higher grade than the G5 assigned).

Too bad since this is a rare and very valuable die variety in its own right. The surfaces are decent but traces of microscopic roughness can be found in protected areas. No significant marks. Mostly glossy olive brown with chocolate highpoints. The date is strong (albeit altered) but the reverse legend is relatively weak, as usual. M-LDS.

LIBERTY is nearly complete as well, but only half of the reverse remains visible. Quite nice for a low grade 1799 cent.

A decent 1799 cent for the grade, especially with such a relatively strong date.

The bottoms of the date digits are fading into the rim but the date remains easily readable. About a third of the reverse legend remains visible. Not too bad for a low grade 1799 cent, and the easily readable date is a big plus.
