1797 S-129 R5. VG-10. M over E in AMERICA. Sharpness VF25 with an old pinscratch across the portrait at the forehead and two more across the neck at the throat. In addition there are a couple dull rim bruises at LI and several thin cuts on the edge in that area plus a few more on the edge at the F in OF. Fortunately the edge cuts do not show on either side. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive. Glossy dark steel brown. The date is bold and the legends are strong. The M over E feature is obvious without the aid of a glass. An important example of this rare variety. Called VF25 net VG10 and tied for CC#7 in the Breen/Bland condition census. Noyes has this one listed as tied for CC#8. Comes with an impressive provenance.

The M over E feature, however, is clear. Nice for the grade.

Smooth, corrosion-free surfaces showing only a few minor marks, including a vertical nick in the field before the upper lip and a shallow planchet flake right of the F in OF. LDS, Breen state II. The fused dentils over IC in AMERICA are obvious. The date is clear and the legends are strong. The stemless wreath feature is bold. Very nice for the grade, close to VG10.

1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath. Good-5. Very slightly sharper but there is a fine horizontal hairline scratch across the obverse, plus a few less obvious ones on the reverse. These hairline scratches are old and blend perfectly into the attractive glossy chocolate brown toning. No corrosion or verdigris. The date is clear and the legends are complete, although the tops of UNITED are flowing into the rim. Rare LDS, Breen state V, with a die crack from the rim over the bust tip to the lower part of the neck.

Great eye appeal for the grade. Would qualify for a VG10 grade if the left side of the reverse was struck up as well as the rest of the coin. M-LDS, Breen state IV late. The date and legends are bold except for UNITED S, which are weak but readable as they flow into the rim. Appears to be a case of non-parallel die faces. Much beading shows around the edge, which is typical for planchets used on this variety.

Rather frosty steel brown and chocolate with hints of lustrous lighter brown and tan faded down from mint color in a few of the protected areas. There is a small patch of shallow corrosion at the dentils over ER in LIBERTY and traces of microscopic reddish verdigris on the left top of the R in AMERICA. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II. Looks better than the description may make it appear. A very sharp cent that just misses the condition census for the variety.

1798 S-154 R4+ Style I Hair with Large 8. VG-8. Sharpness VF20 but moderately granular with a few very shallow pitmarks scattered over the obverse. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy medium brown and chocolate. MDS, Breen state II. The date is bold and the legends are clear.

1798 S-155 R3 Style I Hair with Reverse of 1796. Fine-15. Sharpness VF30 with faint roughness hidden under a glossy olive brown patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown. No marks or verdigris. The date and legends are bold. M-LDS, Breen state V. An attractive if imperfect example of the popular Reverse of 1796 type.
