Nonetheless, the legends are complete and very strong on both sides. Struck with the obverse slightly off to K-10 and the reverse off a bit to K-1 causing a few letters to be tight to the edge. Weight listed as 17.6 grains on the PCGS label. PCGS population 6 with 22 finer.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 8,000.

1723 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny Breen-158 Martin 4.48-Gc.28 Rarity-5. VF-20. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there are a few shallow pitmarks scattered over both sides, and some of these pits contain greenish verdigris. The remainder of the planchet is problem-free and quite attractive. Frosty medium brown. This is the variety with "REX" crumbled to read "BEX". Breen lists this variety as Very Rare, and the Martin rarity rating is R5.
Estimated Value $150 - 250.

1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-3 Rarity-3. NGC graded AU-53 Brown. The "VOOE" variety. Very attractive glossy light chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. The only defects are a tiny rim nick at the L in POPULI and a fresh, very light scuff on some of the highpoints on the lower half of the reverse. Otherwise this piece is choice in every respect. An outstanding example of the popular "VOOE variant on which the C in VOCE is closed. The VOOE feature is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.

Lot 912
1778 Machin's Mills Vlack 11-78A Rarity-3. PCGS graded VF-25. Slightly glossy light chocolate brown with darker chocolate toning in protected areas. The surfaces are covered with extremely fine roughness that could be attributed to pre-striking planchet striations for the most part, but there are no marks or traces of verdigris. The date and legends are clear, although the tops of a few letters on the left sides are fading into the rim thanks to a slightly uneven strike. Overall this is a nice example of one of the early coppers struck in the Colonies (rather than being struck elsewhere for use here). The PCGS grade is conservative for this piece.
Estimated Value $300 - 500.

The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth, and there are a couple specks of shallow verdigris at CT in AUCTORI. No contact marks or other notable defects. The date is complete and strong and the legends are clear. The "double chin" feature is bold. A nice example of this popular type.
Estimated Value $650 - 850.

1786 Connecticut Miller 5.4-O.1 Rarity-2. VF-20. Mailed Bust Left. Glossy olive and dark steel brown. The planchet is smooth, free of corrosion or voids. Lot 915
1787 Connecticut Miller 33.20-Z.11 Rarity 7+. Good-5. Sharpness at least VF20 but there are a half dozen dull dents on the obverse and two more on the reverse, and each of these dents is strong enough to cause a bulge on the opposing side. Otherwise the surfaces and planchet quality are very nice with only trivial roughness visible in the fields and protected areas. The color is an attractive glossy chocolate brown with medium brown toning on the devices. Struck very slightly off center to K-1 leaving the lower half of the date off the planchet, but the upper half of the date is clear and the legends are strong. All the die cracks known for this variety are present. Only 6 examples are known. Missing from the ANS and recently dispersed Ford collections, and this example shows a bit more detail than the Perkins coin. A very important piece for the serious collector of Connecticut coppers.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.

The date is bold and the legends are clear. The reverse was double struck with an offset between impressions of about a half millimeter. 1787 Nova Eborac with Reverse Figure Seated Left Breen-986. NGC graded VF-35. Glossy light chocolate brown with smooth, attractive surfaces. No corrosion or verdigris. The only mark is a faint hairline scratch from the tip of the nose to the left foot of the R in EBORAC. The 17 in the date is clear but the 87 is faint at best. Struck with the dies slightly misaligned with the obverse off to the top and the reverse off to the top as well, which is in the opposite direction due to the normal head-to-foot die orientation.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

Lot 927
1787 Auctori Plebis Breen-1147. VF-25. Choice glossy chocolate brown with some lighter brown mixed into protected areas on the reverse. The only marks are a tiny planchet void on the edge at the top of the obverse and a splash of slightly darker chocolate brown toning on the lower right part of the obverse. Smooth and attractive. The obverse portrait shows muted details, as always, but the remainder of the details are strong. The lower half of the date is off the planchet, as usual thanks to the undersize planchets used for these early coppers, but the rest is bold.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
