One of the classic rarities of Latin American minor coinage with only 4 specimens known to exist. The Whittier Collection specimen sold for $6325. This is a evenly struck example and toned. Genoa was one of the most important Mediterranean ports for centuries, with trade to Greece, the Ottoman Empire and points east enriching this nation state greatly. As the trade routes gradually shifted west through the Atlantic, Genoa declined. In fact, two years after this coin was minted, Napoleon would conquer the area, and form the Ligurian Republic.
