The city of Meissen located not far from Dresden, was founded in AD 929 by Henry the Fowler. The city is probably best known for its manufacture of porcelain. Locally is found large deposits of potter's clay and China clay. This allowed for the first porcelain factory outside of China to be established in 1710.
