Necklace of Venetian Chevron Beads, Made for the African Trade. Venice, Italy, c. early to about mid-20th century. Necklace said to be from Ethiopia. The glass beads are the classic "Chevron" type, multi-layered in white, red, and with an outer lay of intense deep blue. This bead was popular with the natives for centuries, and was among the earliest Italian trade goods going into Africa. Length: 30". All nicely preserved.

Three Figural Carvings in Ivory. China, c. 1960's-1970's. Two are full figure renderings of beneficent beings -- a woman holding a peach; and a bearded elderly man holding a fish; both on custom wood bases. Lastly, a plaque with facing head of a goddess, who wears a multi-tiered headdress, and heavy floral earrings. Average height of figures: 6-1/4". Lot of 3 items.

Massive Cast and Chiseled Bracelet in Brass. Said to be from Ghana, c. early 20th century. Constructed as three joined, penannular bracelets, with rounded exteriors and a portion which is thinner and plate-like, yet still rounded. The whole enriched with extensive geometric-patterned engraving. Size: 3-3/4" x 4-1/4". A very fine example of nearly antique metal work. Heavy!

A Menagerie of Animal & Critter Netsukes and Small Okimonos in Ivory. Japan, c. 1920-1975. This a charming group of nicely carved animals and sea creatures, the bulk tinted or toned, to bring out the details and textures. Of note are: a dinosaur(!!!); an octopus grappling a turtle; a delightful horse with head lowered; a ferret-like creature wearing a wig; and perhaps the oldest, a finely detailed bamboo shoot with insect. All finely preserved -- a few with small age cracks. Largest: 3". Lot of 11 items.

Choice Netsukes and Small Okimonos in Ivory. Japan, c. 1920-1975. Seven of the carvings are netsukes, the rest are small okimonos. Most of the subjects seem to be immortals and deities -- rest everyday persons, including two finely rendered "geishas." All pieces exhibit especially fine carving and finish. Largest: 2-7/8". Lot of 11 items.

Lot of Fanciful Netsukes and Small Okimonos in Ivory. Japan, c. 1920-1985. A delightful and varied grouping of nicely fashioned carvings, the bulk attractively polychromed. Included are mythical personages (mermaid), as well as figures from daily life (a fisherman, or a sumo wrestler), as well as religious (smiling Buddha). The newest piece in ivory-like resin, with revolving face to display the figure's dual aspects. Eight of the pieces carved as netsukes. All finely preserved. Largest: 2-1/2". Lot of 14 items.

Once more, an interesting and varied grouping of nicely fashioned carvings, the bulk attractively polychromed; the subjects comprising the usual genres. Eye-catching are: A bountiful and erotic nude caressing an octopus; a delightful badger figure in human garb; a benign and dignified immortal with white beard; and a child playing with a large theatrical mask. Sculpted Figure in Ivory -- of Japanese Ethnic Interest. Japan, c. 1950's-1960's. Image of a mature man, probably a Shinto priest, who holds a lengthy phallic implement. Man in elaborately patterned and embroidered kimono, lovingly detailed on the sculpture. He holds fenestrated basket over head, as if putting on a hat. Carving enhanced with brown and reddish coloring, with touches of gilding. Height: 6"; on custom wood base.

Two Polychromed Ivory Figurines of Children -- Characters of Japanese Folklore. Japan, c. 1950's-1960's. One, a young boy holding a large peach -- likely Momotaro, the "Peach Boy." He with pleasant, plumpish features, and wearing decorative patterned garments; his shirt with fan emblems with roiling waves within. Along with him is a figure of a little girl holding a ladle. Her features are set, and determined, as she also lifts a buck filled with water. Heights: 4". Colorful, charming art. Lot of 2 items.
