Lot 196		Beauharnais, Eugène de (1781-1824) Son of Josephine, Napoleon I's first wife; stepson and adopted child of Napoleon I; he held the titles of Prince of Venice, Duke of Leuchtenberg, and Viceroy of Italy; he served as Napoleon's aide-de-camp and commanded the Army of Italy. ALS ("Eugene"), 1p, in French, Eichstätt (in 1817 his father-in-law, Maximilian I of Bavaria, gave him the administration of the Principality of Eichstätt), 1823. Fine. To an unnamed colonel, who has recommended an architect to Eugene. Eugene replies that he would like nothing more than to grant the request, except for the fact that Madame Berthauls has already asked him to hold the place for her young son and, until the boy is old enough, offers the services of the architect who has taken over the work of her late husband. Older brother of Napoleon I, who made him King of Naples and Sicily (1806-1808) and King of Spain (1808-1813); after the 100 Days Campaign, he spent 17 years in America (1815-1832). DS ("Bonaparte") as "Grand Electeur" on an Imperial Decree in the name of the emperor, Napoleon, 1p, vellum, 15" x 19½", 1804 Aug. 31 (14 fructidor, year XII). Fine. Lot 199		Bonaparte, Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) Empress of the French (1804-1809) as the first wife of Napoleon I. LS ("Josephine"), in French, 1p, 4½"x7¼", Navarre, 1811 Aug. 7. To Monsieur Leyraud, Minister of Finance, asking a favor for a retired captain who would like to make himself useful in a job as collector or tax inspector of a town. Josephine highly recommends the captain and takes the opportunity to assure M. Leyraud of her fondness for him. Very fine. Matted with an image of Josephine and framed to an overall size of 21"x18". Lot 202		Napoleon I. Letter endorsed ("Bonaparte") as General in Chief of the Army of England, 2pp, 12½" x 10", Toulon,Year VI 24 florial (1798 May 13). A retained copy of a letter sent by the Director of the Navy at Toulon to Napoleon as he prepares to invade Egypt (his army left Toulon on May 19, 1798). The Director gives a quick run-down of resources needed, with detailed instructions on needed changes to ships and the costs involved for them, as well as for food and munitions; the sum he needs for two months comes to 1,960,000. The writer fears desertion by the sailors ("The sailors, I foresee, will be the greatest obstacle to the projected armament,") and hopes that the executives of the Directory will ensure that the sailors stay at their posts from fear of punishment if not from love of duty. Very good; some paper replacement at upper and lower edges, affecting part of Bonaparte's signature, which is still legible. Excellent content. Estimated Value $600 - 800. Lot 203		Sihanouk, Norodom (1922-) Sihanouk served two terms as king, two as sovereign prince, one as president, two as prime minister, and one as Cambodia's non-titled head of state; he abdicated on Oct. 7, 2004. TLS ("N. Sihanouk") as head of state, 4pp, 10¾" X 8¼", Phnompenh, 1966 July 17. An eloquent letter written in the midst of the Vietnam War, adressing the accusations of an American that Sihanouk has misconceptions regarding the role of the USA in southeast Asia. He writes, "…It seems to me that…you should be much more 'saddened' at the activities of your country in this area and at the root cause of the 'resentments' of our people…." He examines the motivation of the U.S. in staying aloof for the first years of both World Wars, then discusses the "Cold War," and America's "support for France's colonialist 'dirty war' in Indo-China." He admits to the "generosity" of the American people and regrets that "the present US administratin has turned its back on its own liberal traditions to become the symbol of reaction and oppression. No words of mine on this subject could be half as eloquent as the bombs and napalm with which your planes are daily scarring and burning the fields, homes and bodies of the South Vietnamese people. / … we and our neighbours in Indochina did not free ourselves from French colonial rule only to fall under American or any other foreign rule…." He brings up allegations in the U.S. press against Cambodia "aimed at providing the pretext for systematic bombing of our territory," [which did take place in 1969]. A fascinating letter!
