1862, $2 United States Note. . Fr-41. . KL-100. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 65. This 1862 $2 Legal Tender has gorgeous perfect color of both the ink and crisp paper. The centering is much better than most, as well, in an the issue where both sides tend to be unevenly trimmed due to the exigencies of the Civil War. The note has few peers in terms of visual impact on the appreciative collector. A piece of currency history that certainly has earned its high grade.

Lot 3795
1901, $10 United States Note. . Fr-114. . KL-380. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 66. F-114 is a readily available number within the nine different Bison $10 Legal Tender signature combinations. That makes this an ideal pick for the serious collector with no premium is attached for rarity. The note is gorgeous! It has splendid portraits Lewis and Clark flanking an American Bison, known by us unlettered folk as a buffalo.

The portraits of Lewis and Clark were engraved by George Smillie. Smillie produced some 300 portrait engravings over his career, including many presidents, vice presidents, cabinet members and the like. (The Bison's name, by the way, was "Pablo.") Although the reason for the selection and production of this design remains a mystery, it is quite possible that its choice was influenced both by the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, as well as the upcoming 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Oregon.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 11,000.

1901, $10 United States Note. . Fr-115. . KL-381. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 66. A fresh Gem quality note that boasts perfect colors, deep and original embossing, with superb aesthetic appeal. F-115 is one of the scarcer Bison varieties. This beautiful example is sure to attract concentrated bidder attention when auctioning begins, and in the current market where high grade is exceedingly popular, it should go for quite a sum!
Estimated Value $9,000 - 11,000.

A lovely gem specimen of this popular issue with bright red seal and serial numbers giving it a wonderful black-white-and-red aspect. This series of notes (they were issued from 1901 until 1928 despite all having the "Series 1901" imprint) is among the most attractive and hence the most popular. Gems are rarely seen now.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 17,500.
