1878 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. A fully white gem. Among the finest graded. This lustrous example that has rich frosty white devices on both sides resulting in the cameo effect. Clearly, on this razor-sharp Proof, the dies were spaced at the right distance apart to prevent any weak metal flows; and it is understood that Proofs in the 19th century were struck twice by the dies, insuring consistent boldness. The designs are very strong for the date. Only 800 Proofs struck. Pop 5; none finer @ PCGS. (PCGS # 86439) .

1883 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65 Prooflike. A nice white coin. Fully prooflike. Low mintage business strike issue with only 8,000 struck. Pop 1; none finer at NGC. Only 2 Prooflike examples graded at NGC (PCGS # 6365) .
There was an expansion of silver coinage in the mid-1870s. Then, toward the latter quarter of 1877, vast numbers of previously exported silver coins began returning to the United States from abroad, principally from Central America and Canada. Tens of millions of coins (worth perhaps as much as $30 million in the estimate of Robert W. Julian) returned like a whirlwind from the past. This vast "inpouring" continued well into 1880, much to the amazement of observers.
In response to this inpouring, the Treasury ordered the suspension of minor silver coinage in early 1878, and did not resume it for some years because of the accumulation in the Treasury. It is Julian's contention that contrary to popular belief, the coinage of Morgan dollars had nothing to do with the interdiction of subsidiary silver mintage in the years 1879-90.

1883 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A nice bold strike with golden toning on both sides. Well detailed for this more difficult P-mint Proof from the low-mintage 1880s, a coin whose golden color deepens at the rim to steel with blue accents, shimmering on the highlights. All this, plus the razor-sharpness, adds considerably to the appeal of this nearly perfect Gem. One of the smartest looking Proofs of this date and grade. Only 1,039 Proofs struck. Pop 1; 11 finer; 10 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 86444) .

One would be hard pressed to locate a more pristine 1885 seated Liberty half dollar at this grade level, even if one were known to either NGC or PCGS. 1888 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. A hint of light gold toning around the edges. Mostly untoned and a nice strike. Only 12,001 minted. A spot-free dazzler whose mint color shames just about any lesser Mint State silver coin of this year. By all accounts, 1888 is exceedingly scarce in this grade (see the following census). Sheer boldness of strike throughout would be the ideal for an 1888 as well, and this coin meets the challenge to strike completely; the design left by the rebound of the dies is in an excellent state at the centers as well as the legends and date. Pop 13; 9 finer (PCGS # 6370) .

1889 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. ICG graded Proof 65. Lightly toned. Only 711 Proofs struck. An hard to believe array of original surfaces supports attractive highlights. Nicely struck, as well, with the seated figure of Liberty comparable to the best preserved specimens of this date, and a first-rate eagle as well. The dates from 1879-90 all have low business strike mintage; Proofs are the way to go when endeavoring to complete a set of the sharpest strikes (PCGS # 6450) .
